Dear Parents,

We are off to a great start here at Grant. As I reflect on the preparation that occurred during the month of August as we prepared for students to arrive, I am impressed by the dedication and effort that the staff put forth. The teachers, instructional assistants, custodians, office staff, and administration joined forces to ready our building for the arrival of 420 students.

Speaking of our students, enrollment is slightly higher to begin this school year. We are definitely ready to educate all students who walk through the front doors. As students arrive to school, one of our biggest priorities is providing a safe place for everyone to learn. There have been several safety concerns in schools around Oregon and across the country. We will be focusing on safety and building security as our primary topic during our Wednesday, October 19th parent club meeting. Please feel free to attend in person or log on via Zoom for this informative meeting.

There are many exciting events and activities that will be happening this school year. I encourage you to become involved in these activities and volunteer if you have the time. Please attend our parent club meetings/coffee with the principal gatherings each month as we have changed the focus to help educate you as to the different things we do here at school. We take pride in our level of communication with parents and hope that you will stay in contact with us as well.

We look forward to the challenges and rewards of educating your children this year. It is definitely going to be a terrific 2022-13 school year!

• Confidently transfer care of a child to a caregiver.

It’s a new school year and a good time to share a few reminders about traffic around the school.

Students, parents, buses, staff and school neighbors all share the same travel routes through the neighborhood to and from the school. Peak travel times can create congestion and increase the need for safe and courteous travel practices.

Here are a few ways parents can help us create a safe, respectful and positive environment when driving near the school:

• Please drive slowly. Remember, the speed limit in a school zone when lights are flashing is 20 miles per hour.
• Please don’t park in neighbors’ driveways at any time, even if the driveway is open.
• Don’t block streets, stop in intersections or crosswalks, and please obey crossing guards’ instructions.
• Remind children to stop and look both ways before crossing streets, and to respect neighbors’ property – for example, don’t make shortcuts through neighbors’ yards.
• When lining up to pick-up or drop-off students, leave at least three feet of space between your car and the nearest driveway opening.
• Avoid lining up early for pick-up or drop-off to help minimize congestion.
• Don’t drive in bus lanes, even if no buses are present.

Be sure to let your school office know if you have a new address, email or phone number.

The parent or guardian marked as the primary contact in the student information system will receive automated communication.

Messages will also be sent to the student’s home phone number contained in the database, if different from the primary contact phone number.
