Discovery Middle School

Spring is finally here-HOORAY! With the beautiful weather and seasonal change it's time to start preparing for the Annual Day of Caring, which is on Friday, May 17, 2019.

What is this? The Day of Caring is a day in which our entire 8th grade class goes out into the community to do service projects for those in need who have requested our assistance. We partner with our local United Way to reach out to those that would like our help. We send 8th graders out, along with an adult leader, in groups of approximately 10 students to sites within the Alexandria area. The projects may include, light yard work, raking, scraping and painting, general cleanup, window washing, planting or lawn maintenance/landscaping. These tasks are usually all outdoor based experiences, the only exception may be if we go to a local business or organization to help, then we may go indoors. It is such a wonderful experience for our youth to be out in our community lending a helping hand. It's so important to work together that we all get matching t-shirts to wear on the day of the event!

The afternoon of work ends with a collective gathering for pizza in the park and a chance to relax before we go back to school for the remainder of a flexible day. The day is possible because of so many people- thanks to all who help make it happen! If you have any questions or concerns surrounding this day- please contact Sarah Reif 320-762-7900x4306 or

Mobile Alerts and Schoology Access

Have you ever wondered if there was an easier way to get notifications on your phone about your child's grades? Attendance? Or course work? Well, you can! It's all located in the settings in the 'A' App. The app can be found in the App Store/Play Store when you search for "Alexandria Public Schools". Once you get the app, use the "My Family Login" portion to get connected to your students. Once there, watch the video below to learn how to customize your notifications to meet your exact needs. (To login to "My Family Login", use your ParentVue UserID and the initial password of Cardinals!)

Secondly, we want to show you how to get more out of Schoology as a parent. You can do this by getting your Parent Access Code from the office and using the video to login to your student's account. It's super simple and will get you all the information you need to keep a handle on what's going on in their classrooms. If you have any questions, let us know and we can help!

Students Helping Those In Need...

On Thursday, March 28th- the Discovery Middle School Student Council set out to help those in need in our community! We traveled to the United Way Food Drop where the group (including 6-8th graders) helped bag, box, and ultimately deliver food to those awaiting some extra support. The volunteers and United Way staff were incredibly thankful and grateful for our helpful assistance! And the students had a GRAND time helping, and having a little fun while doing so!

Alexandria Public Schools, a Best Community in Music Education District

The NAMM Foundation has honored Alexandria Public Schools on its list of Best Communities for Music Education in 2019 for demonstrating an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.

This recognition celebrates the commitment of our dedicated, inspiring music educators in every school, and affirms the School Board’s commitment to music opportunities at every grade level.

Discovery Middle School is a special place for music. Thank you to our music educators – Lisa Blevins, Greg DeGier, Derek Ziemer & Maddie Long – for all you do for our students!
