In 1852, Cavour was made prime minister by Victor Emmanuel II. Cavour came from a noble family who was a monarchist who believed in Realpolitik. Reformed the kingdom of Sardinia economically. He provoked war with Austria and with the help of Napoleon, defeated Austria and annexed Lombardy. Cavour gained many states to join Sardinia in order to achieve his goal of unifying Italy. He died in 1861, while he was not able to finish his successors achieved his goal of uniting Italy.
