The Mustang Round Up
May 28, 2023
Happy Memorial Day
Good Evening Mustang Families,
We hope everyone is enjoying the extra long weekend ahead of the final home stretch of the school year. While it's nice to have a short break and reset before the craziness of the promotions and graduations, it's important to remember this break is in honor of Memorial Day. A day to remember the men and women who have died serving our country in the armed forces. Having grown up in San Diego, I have always been inspired by the commitment of individuals from around the country and the globe who sign up to offer their lives to keep our country safe and strong. Throughout my 19 years as an educator, I have also too often been witness to the loss of a student's family member in combat and the impact it has on a student and community. Each year during this holiday, I reflect on the promise to "never forget" and hold in the highest regard the commitment of our service men and women, willing to lead at a moment's notice to preserve the rights and security of our country. The words James Garfield spoke at the first official gathering of "Declaration Day" the precursor the Memorial Day ring true today as they did in 1868:
“We do not know one promise these men made, one pledge they gave, one word they spoke; but we do know they summed up and perfected, by one supreme act, the highest virtues of men and citizens. For love of country they accepted death, and thus resolved all doubts, and made immortal their patriotism and their virtue.”
Happy Memorial Day
