Team Batman
IT'S NOT WHO WE ARE INSIDE, BUT WHAT WE DO THAT DEFINES US
High School Night
Our 8th graders will soon be heading off to high school. To assist with this great decision, we will be hosting High School Night on Thursday, November 14, from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to receive information about DCPS high schools and the application process. All 7th and 8th grade families are invited to attend. We hope to see you there!
8th Grade Promotion
The 8th grade promotion has been set for Thursday, June 18th at 10:00 am at American University's Bender Arena. The 8th grade team is excited to work with this convenient, spacious venue and will release more information about promotion events as details are confirmed.
Mr. Haller: 8th Grade Spirit Week
Ms. Anderson: Math
This week students began Module 2 - Transformations (Geometry). Students investigated and applied three basic rigid motions - translation, reflection and rotation. Next week students will begin sequencing these transformations and also study the concept of congruency. For more information and an outline of the expectations for the module please click here. Next Friday, Students will complete a summative assessing mastery of transforming on the coordinate plane.
- Translation: A translation has a distance and a direction. It moves every point in a figure the given distance in the given direction.
- Reflection:The reflection of a figure across a line takes every point of the figure to a point directly opposite to it on the other side of the line and the same distance from the line.
- Rotation: A rotation has a center, an angle, and a direction. It moves every point of a figure in a circle around the center, in the direction specified (clockwise or counterclockwise), and for a distance specified by the angle.
- Congruence: One figure is congruent to another if there is a rigid transformation (a sequence of translations, rotations, and reflections) that moves the first figure so that it fits exactly over the second. The second figure is called the image of the rigid transformation
Please check ASPEN for grade updates and check this link for family materials and sample problems/solutions for transformations!
Algebra:
This week students continued Module 1 - Linear Functions with a study of systems of linear equations and inequalities. Students learned two ways to determine solutions to systems - graphing, substitution, and work on elimination this coming Monday. Next week we will spend significant time practicing and mastering these strategies. Additionally, we will spend some time focusing on writing equations given word problems.
Mathamagicians of the Week: Michael Allen and Kennedy Malone
Ms Cady: History
This week students worked on their NPG Summative, choosing a person from U.S. History they felt is underrepresented in art and researching that person in order to be able to make a portrait of them. Students are expected to finish this on their time, it is due Oct. 30. Students also learned about the Bank Wars and Nullification Crisis, creating a political cartoon for their first formative of the unit. Finally, students explored the events of the Trail of Tears through primary source analysis. Next week students will dive deeper into the Indian Removal Act through a role play exercise, take their second formative of the unit, and complete their Unit 3 summative (Wednesday-Friday in class, at home as needed).
At this point students should have 8 Secondary Sources in NoodleTools. Two more sources (for a total of 10) are due 10/29. Please check in with your student regarding their progress, students should see me if they have questions.
Passport to History: The first two passport sites are due 10/22 electronically (Google Slides or Powerpoint emailed or shared with me).
History Happened Here are history field trips to historic sites in our region aligned to our I&S curriculum. While it would be great to visit each of these sites as a classroom field trip, due to time and numbers, it is often not possible. These trips allow for interested students to explore History on a day-long field trips on a Saturday.
The trips are:
- Williamsburg on November 2nd
- Fort McHenry on February 8th
- Harpers Ferry, WV (John Brown's Raid) on March 14th
- Harriet Tubman Byway and the Underground Railroad on April 25th
- James Madison's Montpelier, Orange, VA on May 16th
Scholarships are available, thanks to our amazing ADCA!
We need 40-45 8th graders to run the trip. Please talk with your friends!

Ms. Tingling-Clemmons: English
This week our astonishing scholars challenged themselves with a hodgepodge of assignments. We started the week with a quiz on pages 86-92 of “A Raisin in the Sun” afterwards we recapped what happened in the book by watching a section of the movie and adding critical events to our FreyTag’s pyramid. Next, we created a group micro fiction that was evaluated by their fellow peers. Their classmates evaluated their ability to discern the climax, falling action and resolution. Your pupils then then learned about segregation and redlining in order to better understand the plight of the Younger family. Please ask them about it this weekend. Finally, they concluded the week with a Summative on Plotting stories.
Students of the Week: Ruby Garitano and Richard Hall
Mr. Johnson: Science
Thank you to all the parents who donated to our classrooms this week! The materials are appreciated and will be put to good use!
