Student Support Teams - SSTs
1. If a student is struggling AND had an SST in place last year, which you can see in Infinite Campus, you will want to review what was done last year and begin with the strategies that were in place to support. The advantage to this is that you can choose to use the interventions already used OR can select a different one that you feel would meet the student's needs.
2. If the students is struggling and has NOT been on an SST previously, you will need to put an intervention in place to address the student's need. You can use the resource above for ideas OR can talk to Sue, Dawn, Kelly, Meghan/Heather (academic), Doug (behavior) for other suggestions.
3. When you put an intervention in place, you will need to collect data for 4-6 weeks BEFORE you begin the formal SST process.
- If you see gains from your intervention, YAY! Keep it up!
- If you see no gains from your intervention, complete the SST form in Infinite Campus AND email Sue to notify that you have submitted the form.
4. Once you have notified me about the completed form, I will set a date/time for us to discuss concerns and interventions, review your data, and look at next steps.

HELP! My Kids Won't Stop Talking!
Maslow Before Bloom
Kelly's Koaching Korner
READ READ READ
As we think about what other kids are doing while we are teaching Guided Reading-let’s think about what we are asking them to do.
How can we develop readers?
Could we make sure what we ask students to do are the kind of things they will encounter outside our classroom doors and the kinds of things we do as readers?
Ask yourself these questions about your reading life:
- Do I fill out worksheets after reading a book?
- Do I choose the books I read?
- Do I keep a list of books I’ve read and want to read? If not, do I know people who do?
- Do I answer someone else’s questions after I finish reading?
- Do I make posters about books when I finish reading? What about dioramas?
- Do I recommend books to friends and colleagues?
- Do I talk with someone about what I’ve read?
- Do I always read books that are at my level? Do I ever read something else?
- Do I belong to a book club?
- Do I write a summary every time I finish a book?
- Do I ever annotate, or write questions, responses, and so on in the margins of my books or on sticky notes?
- Do I ask questions, make connections, and infer big ideas at the same time I’m reading?
So-what did you discover? What things are a “go” for you? What things are a big, fat no? Can we continue/work to make reading time authentic and meaningful for our students?
Shout Outs for Staff
Thank you Kelly Moeller for helping with Mantle's classroom on Tuesday, finding creative ways to keep students engaged in her absence.
Thank you Hallie Gaines, Whitney Boeckman, Emily Bateman, Lauren Ogden, and Maria Reece for accepting extra students on Wednesday when we were without a sub!
Thank you Shannon Gann for doing double-duty in the lunch room to cover duties!
Thank you Asha Faison and Kelsey Schaefer for providing childcare during our Back to School Nights! You two rocked it on the playground!
Thank you to ALL who stayed for introductions and presentations for Back to School Night. This was extra time from your families and took additional time to prep - THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR TIME AND ENERGY!
Thank you Jill Lemons, Meghan Holliday, Kelly Moeller, and Heather Scheoneberg for helping with Next Steps assessments! Your assistance is BEYOND appreciated by all our classroom teachers!
Thank you for great table top discussions and sharing out your thoughts/ideas during our discussion of the first two chapters of our book study.
JCPS Foundation Gala - Sept. 24
We have a table with 8 seats for staff who would like to attend this special event. If you are interested in attending, please let me know. It is a great time to come together with district staff and community members to celebrate all things related to our students and the work YOU do every day!
Dawn's Dish
Pineapple Chart
The pineapple represents warm welcomes, celebration and hospitality. We welcome teachers to volunteer to have others come into your room and observe an activity. We would love for everyone to take an opportunity to get into a classroom at least one time per quarter. After the observation, we ask that you leave a note for the teacher with one take-away and one compliment you saw during your time in their room.
This is a great way to learn from our peers and to see what awesome work our colleagues are doing right here in our own building! We are all in this together as a team. These are all OUR students, so let's see what great things they are doing!
The pineapple sign up sheet is in the main office on the bulletin board. It is dry erase for you to add your name, date, and time of activity. Sue and I will do our best to get in and see your activity when you sign up.
Thanks for being willing to take a risk and help us all learn together.
If you have not signed up for your own Twitter page, I highly encourage you to do so. I have found so many wonderful ideas through my learning network. There are PD opportunities in various PLN groups and others just sharing their stories of what their world looks like on a daily basis. Please follow me @Dr_D_Day and follow our school @JCMH_tweets
Technology
I've been in rooms and have seen some great use of technology. Students are logging on to our Go Math website to have some additional practice, as well as enjoying some digital books. I encourage you to work on incorporating technology in your lessons in a meaningful way. How can you move beyond substitution for paper/pencil to students using the technology to create items that they couldn't otherwise make? There are some great ideas out there, maybe hit up Twitter and see what's floating around!
Attendance Bracket
This week's winners are displayed in the link below.
Thank you all for making sure to add your attendance percentage on your sign AND post your letters to spell CHARGERS. Please remember to send me an email when you have spelled out CHARGERS.
Thank you to those that have already been making calls when students are absent and logging those in Infinite Campus. Remember to call when a student has missed 2 consecutive days. When you reach the parent, please shoot Jamie and email and let her know what they said in case she has not been able to reach them.
Discipline Information
Majors to date - 10
Please make sure you are filling out a blue form every time you send a student to a buddy room or call the office for support. These go in my box. We are using this data to determine when students need to move to a Tier 2 or Tier 3 intervention.
Minors are due every Thursday to Jamie. She has a stack of trays on her desk, minors go in the top tray.
Accurate data is extremely important so we can help address behaviors as soon as possible. Everyone is doing an amazing job so far...keep it up!
Committee Updates
Team JC Shirt, anyone?
Important to Remember
*Teachers can begin working on Professional Growth Plans. Your PGP for 2019-20 should be in your TalentEd Perform folder. These are due Sept. 13 - today! If you haven't completed this, please do so this weekend!
*Submit your newsletter to Sue either via mailbox or email. Remember also to upload your newsletter to your classroom website. We want parents to be informed about what is happening in your classroom. Those submitted so far look GREAT!
*Do you have a student who might benefit from some outside tutoring? Talk with Heather Nelson to get a referral form for Whiz Kids. You will need to talk with parents to get their approval for the referral, but it is a WONDERFUL program and a great partnership with SOMA Church that benefits our kids!
