WMS All About Business Students and Business Teachers

Parent Teacher Conferences

We are beginning to prepare for our fall Parent-Teacher Conferences, which will be held during the evening on October 13th and during the day on October 14th. Please click on the link below to complete the survey below by Monday, September 20th for each student you have attending WMS. We will be offering in person and virtual conferences through WebEx. Once we have an idea on how many families are requesting WebEx conferences versus in person, we will send out a more detailed scheduled. You may contact any administrator if you have questions.

Mask and Water Bottle Reminders

Please make sure you are sending your student with a mask each day.

It is also a great idea to send them with an extra one especially on PE days. Overall the students are doing a great job of wearing their mask, but please continue to remind them to make sure it is covering their mouth and nose at all times.

Please also have your student bring a water bottle to school. The water fountains are shut off, but we do have water bottle filling stations.

Immunizations and Physicals

This is a reminder that all 7th graders must have a physical and immunization records on file in the nurses office. Only new incoming 8th graders are required to have a physical and immunizations on file. If your student is or is going to participate in athletics they must have a physical dated after May 1, 2021, no matter if they are new or returning.

Please contact the school nurse, Robin Newcomer, if you have questions. 402-390-8652

For the next three weeks on Tuesdays, the students will be participating in lesson on Hispanic Heritage Month. We will also be working on having students learn their student numbers, these numbers are necessary for students to purchase lunch and print any documents/assignments at school.

Parents must call into the attendance secretary, Ms. Metzler, if your student is ill or not able to attend school that day. Please make sure this is done by 9:00 AM.

The attendance number is 402-408-8649 or 402-390-6464

Check out the attendance handouts below on the importance of attendance here at school.

WMS Clubs and Activities

It is important for students to feel a part of a school community and one way to do that is to get involved. This past week we have shared the list of activities and clubs that are being offered here at WMS. You can find that list on our website or by looking at the document attached.

School work when your student is absent!!

If your student is gone for whatever reason, please have them check their Google Classrooms for all assignments. This is used by all WMS teachers and is updated daily.

Excessive Vandalism

This past week we have been made aware of a “TikTok Challenge” that promotes taking school property to steal or destroy it. As a result, numerous bathrooms in our building have seen soap dispensers pulled off walls, feminine product containers be taken, and bags of soap be thrown all over restrooms.

Please talk with your student about respecting school property. In addition, we are asking for help in finding those responsible. If your students reports having information or has seen a video on social media, please let our administrations know so that we can help prevent it from happening again.

Free Rides on Metro Transit for Students

K-12 Rides Free is a pilot program that offers free access to bus, MOBY, and ORBT services for kindergarten through 12th-grade students in the Omaha region during Metro’s regular service hours. The program started on May 10, 2021 and will run until June 1, 2022. All K-12 students in the Omaha metro and surrounding area are eligible. High school students must show a valid school-issued ID when boarding. For those who do not have a school-issued ID, Metro will provide one. Westside Middle School participates in TAGG. TAGG has a growing list of participating businesses who will donate a portion of what you spend there to our school. WMS uses these funds to help support our school PBIS store and extra supplies teachers need throughout the year.

This is a fast and easy way to help our building without fundraising. Watch this video to see how it works. https://youtu.be/WS2u4s1J63c

Below is a list of business that participate in TAGG. Remember to select Westside Middle School!!

Parent AHERA Notifications for 2021-2022 School Year

Annual AHERA Notice

The Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA) requires each public school district to annually notify parents, staff, and employee groups of its asbestos management plans. A management plan is in place for Westside Middle School and is available for review either at the school building or at the Westside Service Center, 9437 J St. Omaha, NE.

This school building was originally inspected in the1980’s and re-inspected by a certified inspector every three years thereafter. The three-year re-inspection and a ceiling tile inspection was conducted in 2019, and periodic surveillance will be conducted as required. No abatement activities are currently in progress or scheduled for the 2021-2022 school year at this building.

The Designated Person responsible for managing the District’s AHERA compliance and the contact person for questions or to review a management plan is the Director of Facilities, Russ Olsen (402) 390-8331.
