AMCMS Principal's Office
What is going on in the Principal's Office?
My Challenge to You
This week's Challenge is coming from Beth Sherry! I did not ask her to write this but I think it is quite fitting given the week we had last week.
The Power of Positivity!
Frequently, we talk about the need to use positive reinforcement for our students’ behaviors. Something that might come to mind are free time, listening to devices, candy, computer time, etc. If you think about how you run your classroom, I’m sure you can come up with even more ideas!
Did you know?: Your presence can also be a reinforcer.
We regularly discuss the need for developing relationships with our students. Getting to know our students is extremely important, and a relationship needs work every single day.
Things to consider and try:
Meet and greet your students at the door every day.
- Ask them about their weekend.
- Ask them about their day.
- Let them know that you are glad to see them.
- Give them a compliment.
Build up students’ self-worth.
- Let them know that you believe in them and you know they can do it.
- Encourage them not to give up.
- Focus on progress, not failures.
Consider what you say and how you say it.
- Be professional with your words – speak to students as an equal.
- Tone is powerful: avoid sarcasm or condescension, even when frustrated.
- Praise students for the good that you see: “I like how you are focused on your work.” – Be specific.
Keep trying to reach your students.
- Apologize if you’ve made a mistake with your interactions with a student.
- Regularly make time to develop connections with your students.
- Listen to your students – really listen. Engage in conversations of their choosing.
- Be alert – check in on students if they seem “off.” Offer help or a listening ear.
What additional ways do you work to develop relationships with students? Please click here to share!
~ Beth Sherry
Beth wrote this as a result of a conversation that she and I had about a specific student. She was able to see a student achieve success because of a small adjustment a teacher made in what he was supposed to complete. This minor adjustment changed his entire approach in how we was working in the class. Most of the time, all it takes is a minor adjustment.
Relationship building does not end because it is January. It continues each and everyday that our students are walking our halls and entering into our classrooms. How are you continuing to build relationships?
Think. Achieve. Succeed.
Jeff

AMCMS Tech Tip of the Week
Academic Tip of the Week
Do you struggle with a particular student that cannot seem to follow the routine you have set for the class?
Try This:
Pay attention to the time in your classroom, the lesson and activity for the day and make sure the student does not have a lot of unstructured time. When students have too much free time they will find ways to stay busy, it just may not be what you want them to be busy with.
SPED Tip of the Week
Wellness Tip of the Week
Eat Less Refined Carbs
Refined carbohydrates are usually sugar, or grains that have been stripped of their fibrous, nutritious parts (includes white bread and pasta).
Studies show that refined carbs can spike blood sugar rapidly, leading to hunger, cravings and increased food intake a few hours later. Eating refined carbs is strongly linked to obesity.
If you’re going to eat carbs, make sure to eat them with their natural fiber.
