Addition and Subtraction
We're continuing to work hard on addition and subtraction, this includes reading our math sentences and solving the problem on our own. Many a times, kindergartners assume we will be adding rather than looking through the whole problem.
At the end of quarter three (in two weeks--YIKES!) I will be assessing if this is a mastered skill to 10 with your child. Manipulatives can be used to help solve equations.
What we learned
Take a look into our class
- As stated above, we continue to work on identifying story elements and retelling events in stories.
- In addition, we've been working on character voices within text.
Writing:
- The kindergartners are working on writing an entire book review; this is QUITE a bit of WORK! Samples have been coming home daily to see progression.
- Did you hear we are in handwriting boot camp? I've assumed the role of the drill sergeant (I moved up the chain of command pretty quickly...) and I am enforcing correct letter formation and sizing. It is my job to ensure our class has the BEST handwriting in the group, and I take my job very seriously (but seriously, I love handwriting!). This will continue for the weeks to come. Please speak with your child when noticing the improvements you are (hopefully) seeing.
Phonics:
- Poem: Oliver Twist
- New words: number, number words: one, two, three, four and five
- Word family: /-tw/ (twist, twig, between, etc.) and /-ch/ (touch, chair, chimney, etc.)
- Focus: BLENDS, BLENDS and more BLENDS [did I mention we are working on BLENDS?]; we also spent a significant amount of time on digraphs (/ch/-/th/-/sh/).
Math:
- Before you know it, we will be addition and subtraction masters! For now, we revisited subitizing because this is something that can help us add and subtract.
A suggestion...
Water bottles come to and from school each night and should be filled at home.
Kindergarten Music Program
Mrs. Flatness has sent a note to families via Seesaw and has posted on the Jackson Parents Facebook page about our canceled program; I, too, am bummed we are unable to share this special event with all of you in person, but taking extra precautions for our students and families health, I understand why the district is not moving forward with it.
That being said, we are still planning to share this day with you with a special link from Mrs. Flatness. This will be coming soon. While you are waiting, enjoy a few clips I took of just our group! Please note, these videos are marked "unlisted" on my YouTube channel, so the videos can only be viewed by those of you with the link. If you would like to share it with extended family members or friends, you will need to share the link to our newsletter.
