Warwick Academy Primary Library
Summer Term
Dear parents,
Last term, I was fortunate to attend the 2017 London Book Fair and I am pleased to report that, contrary to common belief, the printed book is not dead. Not only it is at the center of a multi-millions industry but studies show that readers favor print reading over digital reading regardless of their age.
At this international event, I was also reminded that our young readers can be greatly influenced by the marketing efforts of the main publishing companies but that inspired authors and new voices can be found in less obvious places. As a Librarian, I consider it my duty to encourage our children to step outside of their comfort zone and to expose them to this diversity too.
With this in mind, a Mock Caldecott Award will be introduced to all Primary students in June, during Library times.
Finally, I would like to draw your attention to our deadline for returning Library books which is set up on June 16th this year. I thank you in advance for your support with this.
Kind regards,
Mrs. Wolffe
Mock Caldecott Award
The Caldecott award, named after the 19th century English illustrator, is given out every year by the American Library Association, to the artist of the most distinguished picture book for children. Although the 2017 official winner has already been selected by the ALA, next month, Primary students will have their say about whom, according to them, should have received this award. An opportunity for them to gain awareness of the qualities of a good picture book while expressing ideas and opinions with peers.
New Library Configuration
Some of you may have noticed that the small round tables were replaced by red modular benches in the primary section of the Library. The intent is two-fold: allow for a better flow of students along the book stacks. (Please see attached circulation mode picture) and promote storytelling and role play (Please see attached auditorium mode picture). The Library is set in auditorium mode on Mondays and Tuesdays to accommodate younger classes. The default setting is the circulation setting during the rest of the week.
Final Birthday Book Presentations
My sincere gratitude goes to parents who donated towards our Birthday Book Scheme during term 1 and 2. It is not too late to celebrate your child's birthday in this meaningful way! Please visit https://funds4books.com/ and enter our school code: d02a to participate in time for our final Birthday Book Assemblies: May 11th for Upper Primary and June 11th for Lower Primary.
Please Retun ALL Library Books by Friday 16th June
