Life in Paris
Cole Porter moved to Paris in July of 1917. He told the American press that he was helping out the French Foreign Legion and French army, when in reality he was quite social, participating within extravagant parties and working on music.
He could afford this lifestyle because of his very wealthy wife Linda Thomas, whom he wed in 1919. Their marriage was more of a business arrangement/ friendship due to her failed previous marriage and his homosexuality. She was a big supporter of his and a big part of the reason he was so successful.
He met E. Ray Goetz, who was another American composer who helped him write, Paris, which led to Porters first hit song, "Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love)".
