The Horace Mann & Leet Connection
March 19, 2020
Message from Principal King and Director Rouner
Hello Parents,
We want to thank all of our families for their continued support of our school and classrooms. Mrs. King and Mrs. Rouner have been astounded by the pace of information and changes since Wednesday. We are committed to sharing decisions with you as soon as we are made aware of them and have been working constantly to find solutions to this unprecedented challenge we find ourselves working through.
Our teachers have impressed us with their positive attitudes and willingness to be flexible and change. Today we made plans with them to create an at-home experience to connect your children's learning and your children to their friends. This is something new we have never considered. Through innovative new practices we will find a way to be successful.
Look forward to hearing from us on Monday, March 23rd with an outline for each grade and a plan for how we will stay connected to our families and their at-home learning experiences. We plan to include messages from your child's teacher, daily work and ideas for things to do during your days at home.

Q and A from the Horace Mann Learning Survey
Will we have a way for students to send video messages back to their teachers??
- Yes
- Horace Mann families will receive a home learning code that allows them to share information with their teacher.
- Leet Center families can share information on their private Facebook page.
Will the children have to make up the missed days of school?
- Good question. Mrs. King is waiting to hear back on this and will let you know as soon as I hear the official word on this.
Could we get some packets of work to print at home?
- Yes. We will send home some content you can print on Monday.
Is there anything to download to be able to videoconference?
- No. You won’t have to download anything. We have decided we won’t do video conferencing with practicum because we haven’t found a good way to supervise this
- As our teachers learn the new technology, we may adjust this plan. We will give you plenty of notice if this happens.
- We also understand this may not work for all families.
Can the videoconferencing be done with an IPad?
- Yes
Will work be optional or required?
- At this point, we cannot require the work to be completed. We encourage families to participate as much as possible. We are still waiting to hear from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education on this. We know education is important to our families and we want to support our children during this extended time away from school.
It would be helpful to be able to borrow a laptop.
- Mrs. King contacted families who indicated they need a laptop and made arrangements to check one out. Please contact Mrs. King if you said you needed one and she failed to contact you.
Is this work required to be promoted in grade levels?
- Currently, the purpose of home learning support is not intended to be a pass or fail system for students. Promoting or retaining students will be made in partnership with parents on a case-by-case basis and will be based on performance for the entire school year.

Phyllis and Richard Leet Center for Children and Families
At the Leet Center, family relationships and children are our passion! At the heart of our learning together, you will find educators who see children as capable learners. Children learn through investigation, exploration, and communication. Our pre-school environment is a natural home-like atmosphere that is filled with inquiry and joy each day.
The Leet Center is also home to our developing outdoor classroom and we believe that all the learning that happens indoors can also be present in the outdoor spaces. Open-ended materials and carefully cultivated spaces provide a place for collaboration, thinking, and representation of ideas. Our learning community includes educators and university students who are working together to listen and learn with children. Children, educators, and families each play an important role in honoring the intellectual and emotional integrity of children.
