The virtual Hillview Talent Show: How does it work?
1. There are no auditions! Just submit your video using the links below or go to TinyURL.com/hvts2020. Attach your talent video and we'll put it in the talent show! This should be your FINAL DRAFT exactly as you want it to appear.
2. All videos will be introduced by our Talent Show ASB MC's and put together into one big video that livestreams on May 15th, 2020 6:30pm on YouTube [link TBD] and archived for future watching if you miss it!
3. Your video CAN be longer than 60 seconds...in fact, many acts are 3 minutes long on average, but we want to encourage SHORTER videos so we can make time for everyone. We also might need to shorten some videos to make everything fit together.
4. Videos can be obvious things like singing, dancing, and instruments. We need those! However, they can also be things like screen recording yourself creating art or filming yourself making art and doing a time-lapse. Perhaps you can do some clever video editing "magic"? Are you an actor? You could act out a scene with a friend from home and split screen. What ideas do you have? Send them!
5. Besides bringing our Hillview community together, we are also raising money for Second Harvest Food Bank. In fact, parents, you can donate BEFORE The talent show to help us hit our goal of $6000. We will be advertising this during the show similar to a telethon. Click Here to Visit Second Harvest Food Bank's Hillview Team Fundraising Page.
We hope you'll consider entering, watching, and/or donating to this year's virtual Hillview Talent Show benefitting Second Harvest Food Bank!
ASB Elections: 6th/7th Graders - Last Chance to Vote!
While any student can view speeches, ONLY 6th and 7th graders logins will work for the ballot. This ensures that only eligible voters will cast a ballot for the ASB elected executive board.
Why every 6th and 7th grader should vote!?
ASB Elections are a great time to ask yourself as a student, what sort of qualities do I want in my student leaders? What sort of activities do I want to see? What sort of vibe do I want created on campus? Taking the time to view all speeches and learn about the candidates will allow you to make an informed choice about the types of leaders you want planning school events and setting an example for others.
In addition, each position carries with it responsibilities. You can read about these job descriptions in our Hillview ASB Constitution. As you'll read, some jobs, like Treasurer and Secretary, require students to be able to organize information, record expenses, and tally votes accurately. Other jobs like Media and Photography Managers, Student Store Manager, and Activities Commissioners will require them to document our year, take care of inventory, and decide on themes that meet the needs of all students. The President and Vice President run the meetings, set the tone, and address the school weekly on HawkTalk.
Lastly, this doesn't have to be some "popularity contest"! In fact, only 50% of their candidate score comes from vote totals with the rest coming from their application. We ask you, the student body, to be thoughtful and considerate in their choices on who they believe is the best fit for the job.
This year's candidates who bravely put themselves out there all deserve our gratitude and respect. Thank you candidates for taking a risk and showing tremendous grit!

It's that time of year! End of the year means it's time to tally up our Block H points and make sure yours get counted. Use the easy to follow Google Form (also found in your Hawks Nest Google Classroom) and follow the instructions to get counted! 8th graders, you have two parts...one for the tally, and another for the application.
8th Graders Application: Due May 9th, 2020
The Purpose of Hillview’s Block H Award
The Block H award encourages and recognizes commitment to school involvement and community service.
What is a “Block H Point”?Points are how we measure your service and involvement. For service activities, including community service outside Hillview, you earn about 3 points per hour of service. For school involvement, we use a fixed point system per activity to encourage and recognize involvement.
It's best not to "count" your points and instead just focus on getting involved and volunteering! We've never met a student who got their Block H by asking how many points they had! Fill out the form and follow the steps.
Photo/Video Challenge #3: Inside Out Selfie Expressions
Heck, even if you just want to show off your best wacky face, we'll take your submissions.
This takes only a few seconds...get it done and you might find yourself in the talent show!

The Hillview Counseling Connection
May is Mental Health Awareness month. SafeSpace Center is sponsoring a Spread the Rainbow art project for San Mateo, Menlo Park, and its surrounding communities.
The rainbow symbolizes hope, a light at the end of the tunnel, peace, and serenity. More significantly, rainbows are often seen after a rainstorm when the sun breaks through the clouds. It is not beautiful because of one color, but because they are all joined together!
Please join us and share the powerful and important message a rainbow represents for you. We have all been impacted by COVID-19 and the shelter in place has been a challenge for many of us. We send our sincere gratitude and appreciation to all of those who are working to keep everyone safe, healthy, and fed.
May this rainbow spread faster than the virus itself and bring communities together.

Missing Disneyland? Make Dole Whip or Churros at Home!
Disney Desserts at Home! By Lucinda Higgins and Tiffany Karp
DoleWhip, the frozen pineapple dessert, helps make a Disney experience complete and because we can’t have that experience right now, Disney released its famous recipe through the Disneyland App! You too can make this sweet treat at home with three easy ingredients:
One big scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream
4 ounces or ½ cup of Pineapple Juice
2 cups of frozen pineapple
Put all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth
Use a piping bag to pipe the mixture in a swirl and enjoy!
Note: I actually tried making this myself and I found that it was good but you really have to work quickly to prevent the ice cream from melting. I found that placing it in the freezer for a couple minutes helps firm it up a little bit.
-one cup of water
-8 tsp of butter
-¼ tsp salt
-¾ tsp cinnamon
-1 ¼ cup of all purpose flour
-1 ½ cup canola or vegetable oil
-½ cup of sugar
-Combine water, butter, salt, and cinnamon in a saucepan and bring to boil.
-Reduce the heat and add flour.
-Stir well until it forms a ball. Then remove the mixture from the heat and add the eggs one at a time.
-Heat oil in a saucepan to 350 F and pipe the churro mixture into the oil. Fry the curros until they become golden brown.
-Once they become golden brown, remove the churros from the oil and place them on paper.
-Once they are cooled, roll them in sugar and cinnamon and serve!
Here is the complete churro bites recipe!
Whipped Coffee Review by Mia K.
Have you heard of whipped coffee? It’s been a trend on TikTok for a while now, and everyone can’t seem to get enough of it! People have started whipping everything they can find, and new drinks came around like whipped matcha. This trend is no joke, as I tried it myself. The recipe involves only 2 tablespoons of sugar, two tablespoons of hot water, and two tablespoons of instant coffee. (And milk) Whisk the three ingredients together for what feels like three hours and until you get a whipped texture. (Like whipped cream!) Then add this mixture on top of milk with ice (optional) and mix together. Although you have to whisk until your arm falls off for this beautiful cup of coffee, coffee fans everywhere will love it and anyone who has tried it will say it was worth it! It tastes creamy, despite having no creamer in it, and the coffee is rich in flavor but not too overpowering. Enjoy!

As we all find ourselves spending more time on certain hobbies, like watching Netflix and staying in our pajamas all day, we sometimes need a real boost to get ourselves active. There are so many fun activities to do, but I have found the Nike Training Club definity gives me some

Even better, many of them are led by pro trainers, who know what they’re doing and the best

Nike Training app at the App store and start working out!
The Joke Stand by Riona Faruqi
While some people struggle to find something positive or something to laugh about during these difficult times, 6-year-old, Callaghan McLaughlin decided to take matters into his own hands. Even though he has the privilege to have a loving, well off family, doesn’t mean everyone is having an easy time right now. So instead of making a lemonade stand and selling fresh lemonade to neighbors, he decided to make a drive-by laugh stand. This way he can spread some cheer and still comply with social distancing guidelines.
Callaghan, even at this young age, realized how important it is to try to stay positive during these uncertain times. So to help even further, he made his jokes free of charge allowing anyone “customer” to save their money for more important things, such as food, or bills. To help him out he reads off jokes from his joke book, and is out early in the morning ready for his first shift. He then takes a quick break, and is promptly back out again ready to serve his community their daily dose of laughter. Thanks Callaghan McLaughlin, his neighbors and community can now enjoy a little bit of cheer for free.
200 Flavors of Milkshakes?!?!
South African Restaurant Tops 200 Milkshake Varieties, Earning Place in Guinness Book of World Records
by Hanna Hedley
Gibson’s Gourmet Burgers and Ribs, a restaurant in Cape Town, recently reached 207 flavors of milkshake, earning the Guinness World Record for most varieties of milkshakes commercially available. They opened in 2014 with forty flavors, and over the course of five years have been dramatically increasing their numbers since then, meeting this milestone on October 17, 2019. Understandably, they have an incredible assortment of shakes, including Oreo cheesecake; apple, cucumber, and lime; caramel waffle; and various vegan options. Is your mouth watering yet? If not, well, they also have toppings like Kit Kats, Nutella, mango, and marshmallows. Obviously, you can’t simply drop in for a shake, now or ever, unless you move to South Africa. You can, however, admire their shakes (and burgers) on their website at www.gibsonsburgers.co.za/menu/
Are we alone? by Collin Goel
On April 28th, the Department of Defense released three videos that may very well confirm the existence of aliens. Although each of the videos had already been leaked prior to their official release, the Department of Defence wished to “clear up any misconceptions by the public on whether or not the footage circulating was real”. This could be a breakthrough in the search for extraterrestrial life.
Jimmy Fallon Writes a Song that Captures All of Our Moods During Social Distancing
By Hailey H.
As you may or may not know, the host of The Tonight Show,
Jimmy Fallon, is doing his shows at home. With amazing interviews of
celebrities, and down-right heartwarming videos of his two young
daughters, Fallon has been able to make many viewers laugh during
difficult times. On Monday’s episode, he sang a song called “Starting to
Crack” that encompasses how most people feel during these times.
Fallon has “looked at Tik Tok for 7 hours” , “spent 3 hours taking a
bath”, “stared at a wall like [he’s] in a trance”, and “put on a T-shirt but
wore it like pants”, all while he’s “Starting to Crack”. It’s easy to say
that we all feel the same way, and it’s always good to know that we are

A Message from Mr. Haug
Hello, Hawks! We are now past the halfway point in trimester 3, and if you haven’t checked your grades yet on PowerSchool, this would be a good time to take a look and see how you’re doing. We know that it’s not easy to stay motivated sometimes when you’re working on your own so much, but we just wanted to let our students know how proud we are of the commitment you’ve shown. Keep trying your best, and remember that we are here to support you, even if you just want to say hello every now and then.
