Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
February 11th-15th
What's Going On This Week:
- Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week we will finish our unit on the European colonies. Students should have a completed study guide by Wednesday. This test will cover the 13 colonies, Triangular trade, slavery in the colonies, and relationships with the Native Americans. The test over this will be on Friday 15th. Next week we will flip back to Science and start our unit on Plants and Animals.
- Mrs. Thurston/Leonard/Uhlenhakes' Math and ELA: This week, students will continue working in the book clubs, focusing on interpreting complex texts. We also will be continuing our opinion writing unit where students will focus on writing literary essays.
Spelling tests in Mrs. Leonard's class will be on Thursday Feb. 21st. Mrs. Thurston's class will have their spelling tests this Friday (15th). In math, students will be introduced to decimals. We will be working on relating fractions to decimals (tenths and hundredths).
- Ms. Harris' GT Math and ELA: This week in math we are learning about decimals. Students will learn how to represent decimals as fractions, words, and pictures. They will also learn how to compare decimals. In ELA, we will start our William and Mary unit on Cycles of Change. Students will discuss how change can be positive or negative. They will formulate rules about change that they can apply to their own lives and the books they read. In writing, we are working on writing literary essays and proving a thesis with evidence. There is no spelling this week.
From Ms. Macanas
We are welcoming week 2 of full teaching with a bang! Last week, we were testing the waters and this week we're going all in. Students are starting on decimals, which is something they haven't been taught before. Reviewing multiplication facts is key to helping them! Genius Hour has been coming along really well these past few Mondays, so be sure to catch up with your students and their Genius Hour projects!
In ELA, we are finishing our text structure/feature nonfiction magazine they have been working on the past couple of days. I'm looking forward to beginning our discussion about Cycles of Change which is common throughout stories, but were never put it into words.
