Guidance
As we return after the new year, students are beginning to look into recognizing their own feelings. So far throughout the year we have been discussing recognizing other people's feelings and showing care and compassion.
3rd/2nd grade - Model of the Hand Brain. Students will be learning how their brain is connected to their emotional responses. We discuss managing our emotions and how sometimes our brain tricks our body into believing a situation needs to result in a fight/flight/free response. Students will begin practicing how to calm their bodies and brains down so that they can think clearly and make safe choices.
1st/K/JS - Students are beginning to learn that their bodies feel their emotions rather than needing to look into a mirror to see on their face how they are feeling. There are clues that students need to be aware of to help them recognize their feelings and then begin to calm down. Such clues may include a fast heartbeat, sweaty hands, muscles are getting tight, body is shaking, or even feeling really warm or having a stomach ache. Once students recognize these clues, they know to begin calming down.
