Letter From the Principal
Dear GVES Families,
As we approach the holiday season and get ready for Thanksgiving break, we reflect on all that we are thankful for at GVES. We are thankful for the commitment of our staff. Our teachers and support staff are exceptional at what they do every day for students. High expectations and high standards are met every day. Our staff greet each student every day with a smile and make our school a place where all are supported and given the chance to learn and grow.
We are thankful for our students! The students at GVES are amazing. They work hard to meet our high expectations. They show effective effort and work with a growth mindset! Our children help each other and are kind to each other. They work together and give each other compliments. They use the many strategies they have learned in the classroom and our special programs to interact positively. Our students consistently show respectful, responsible, and ready behavior. They show true joy in the journey of education at GVES. We are thankful that we get to witness their greatness every single day. Thank you for trusting us in working with your children.
We are thankful for the parent community of Green Valley. Your unwavering support is an essential ingredient in our students’ ability to reach greatness. We are thankful for: meals and treats provided for our staff, the fundraising completed by our PTA, the support and leadership of in-school programs, your trust in our work with your child, your regular communication and positive feedback, the priority you place on the education of your child, and much more. A great example of the outstanding partnerships GVES has with the community is the success of the Race for Education Event. It was great to see our community united and in support of improving GVES through the raising of funds for updating the book room. Although it was a cold day, everyone was highly engaged and all had a great time. We are even thankful for the ability to motivate our community by kissing pigs.
Finally, we wish you and your family an amazing Thanksgiving Holiday. May it be filled with rest, relaxation, and quality time with family and friends.
In appreciation,
Dr. Giuseppe Di Monte & Mrs. Hannah Feldman

Hand Washing: Why It's So Important
Why Is Hand Washing So Important?
It's a message worth repeating — hand washing is by far the best way to keep kids from getting sick and prevent the spread of germs.
What's the Best Way to Wash Hands?
Here's how to scrub those germs away. Teach this to your kids — or better yet, wash your hands together often so they learn how important this good habit is:
- Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold). Make sure the water isn't too hot for little hands.
- Use soap and lather up for about 20 seconds. Antibacterial soap isn't a must — any soap will do.
- Make sure you get in between your fingers, on the backs of hands, and under the nails where germs like to hang out. And don't forget the wrists!
- Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.
When Should We Wash Our Hands?
To stop the spread of germs in your family, make regular hand washing a rule for everyone. It's especially important:
- before eating and cooking
- after using the bathroom
- after cleaning around the house
- after touching animals, including family pets
- before and after visiting or taking care of any sick friends or relatives
- after blowing one's nose, coughing, or sneezing
- after being outside (playing, gardening, walking the dog, etc.)
How Do Clean Hands Help Health?
Good hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of many illnesses — from the common cold to more serious infections, such as meningitis, bronchiolitis, the flu, hepatitis A, and many types of diarrhea.
How Do Germs Spread?
Germs can spread many ways, including:
- touching dirty hands
- changing dirty diapers
- through contaminated water and food
- through droplets in the air released during a cough or sneeze
- on contaminated surfaces
- through contact with a sick person's body fluids
When kids come into contact with germs, they can become infected just by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. And once they're infected, it's usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the same illness.
So don't underestimate the power of hand washing! The time you spend at the sink could save you trips to the doctor's office.
