Jefferson High School Newsletter
March 2021
Mission: To educate and prepare each student to succeed in a changing world.
Message from Principal Conrad
Greetings Cavaliers! In a few months we will be officially welcoming you to Jefferson High School as construction will be completed. My name is Dan Conrad and I am honored to be the first principal of Jefferson High School. I am a product of the Sioux Falls School District and a member of the very first graduating class at Roosevelt High School. I started my career in education at Lincoln High School where I spent 11 years as a math and physics teacher and coaching football and baseball. I spent the next 11 years in administration at Washington High School; 7 years as an assistant principal and 4 years as the head principal. As a lifelong resident of Sioux Falls, I look forward to the opportunity to build relationships with the students, staff, and community of Jefferson High school.
As we look forward to the doors of Jefferson High School opening in the fall of 2021, know that the core values of Jefferson will be in line with those of the Sioux Falls School District. JHS will be a place where All means All, People matter Most, and we will always Compete for Excellence. We will work hard to provide opportunities for students to experience success academically and socially. In addition to a rigorous academic course of study, we will have a variety of athletic and fine arts activities and clubs in which students can join. In addition, there is no greater sense of belonging than joining the student body in the auditorium or in the stands cheering on the Cavaliers!
It is inspiring to see the community excitement for Jefferson High School continue to build as our school nears completion. We look forward to moving into Jefferson and preparing for the arrival of students in the fall. We are thankful to the Sioux Falls community for providing us with this amazing facility where students and staff will have opportunities to be their best every day. Until our doors open in June, I invite you to open the link below to join me on a virtual tour of Jefferson High School!
I look forward to working with the JHS community to build a culture that will survive the test of time; a culture where All means All, People matter Most, and Cavaliers will always Compete for Excellence!
Go Cavaliers!

A Vision for the Future
By Dr. Jane Stavem, Superintendent
The Sioux Falls School District enjoys a long history of academic success. Formally established July 3, 1871, our community will celebrate the District’s 150th Anniversary with some fun and engaging events planned over the next several months. We hope you will join in the sesquicentennial activities when they are announced in celebration of public education in Sioux Falls!
From the early days of education in a one-room schoolhouse at the corner of 13th Street and Main Avenue to opening two new schools in the Fall of 2021, it is humbling to think of the thousands of students who have walked the halls and earned a diploma from the Sioux Falls School District. Those graduates with the help of their teachers have, indeed, impacted our community, state, and nation with countless, positive contributions.
Looking back to reflect on success is always inspiring. However, looking ahead to chart the course of education in Sioux Falls for the next 150 years brings with it an even more exciting opportunity. For the past month, our team has been visiting schools to meet with staff and listen to their ideas for how we can make the Sioux Falls School District the best in the nation. These conversations have already identified some consistent needs across the District. Further, they have allowed me to see the passion and commitment of our staff and the hopes and dreams they have for their students on a raw and personal level.
This month, we are meeting with parents and community members to learn what priorities they believe will propel our students into future success. We are asking for input on factors that need to be considered as we start this work, barriers to be addressed if we are to achieve our goals, and key priorities that will move our schools forward and bring exciting opportunities for our students.
While challenging in many aspects, the COVID-19 pandemic has allowed public schools to reassess educational delivery and the social and emotional needs of students. It has challenged us to question and, where necessary, change the status quo. Now is the time to dream big and set our expectations for the future. It is exciting to think of the possibilities that lie ahead for students in the Sioux Falls Public Schools.
JHS Activities Update
We are busy preparing for the year ahead. As construction gets closer to completion we are excited to get students into our wonderful new facility. We will be offering over 30 different athletic and fine arts activities for the 2021-2020 school year. It is our hope that every student finds something they are passionate about and gets involved. Please join us for a virtual Jefferson High School All Activities Night on March 30th to learn more about the different activities we will be offering. This meeting is for all incoming 9th-12th graders and their parents. The zoom link will be emailed out to you in the near future.
