Lansing Elementary Weekly Update
Newsletter for the Lansing Elementary School Family
May 2, 2020
May 21st is quickly approaching and will officially end the 2019-2020 school-year. None of us could have anticipated how this school-year would end. On behalf of the LES staff, we cannot thank our parent community enough for all of the support and grace shown to our staff during these challenging times.
We know this experience has not been easy on anyone but considering the circumstances, I think we have all done a wonderful job serving our students. It has been great to see the connections and deepening relationships between our staff and students.
There have been lots of questions about what next school-year may look like. We will communicate this information to you as soon as we know, but at this point, we simply don't have that information yet.
As we get more information on the re-opening of our communities, look for information that will direct you how to pick up your child's personal items that were left at school, return technology or library books, and pick up school year-books. We plan to do this all in one day, per grade level. It will require careful planning as we must abide by whatever current state and county guidelines are in place at the time. We anticipate this will take place May 26-29.
Wishing you a great week filled up hope and happiness!

A Parent's Guide to Virtual Playdates
From Dr. Jennifer Kolb- Assistant Principal
As a parent and educator, I have been struggling with how to balance the academic learning and social interaction of my own girls with work and home responsibilities. An interesting article I read this week about social interaction was from an online journal (parents.com).
Some of the ideas included how zoom and facetime can be used to allow students to connect socially, and activities children can engage in while they are interacting virtually. Of course, as a parent, I make sure I know the child and parent before arranging a playdate and monitor online interactions. I also feel that parents know best which activities are appropriate for their children. Here are some suggested activities by age group:
For Preschoolers:
-Building challenges: using playdough and allowing kids to build simultaneously
-Sing-a-longs
-Imaginary play
For Elementary School Students:
-Drawing Together
-Crafting
-Lego Challenges
For Older Students:
-Board Games: Checkers, Chess, Monopoly

ZOO WEBCAMS
One activity I have tried to incorporate into our routine is learning more about zoo animals. The San Francisco Zoo has several live cams and we spent some time this morning watching koala bears https://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/cams/koala-cam
The live cams are available 7:30am-7:30pm Pacific Time.
More information about all the animals is available under live cam. We learned about koala’s and even listened to the sounds that they make! What are you going to learn about today?
