Mrs. Blankenship's News You Can Use
Week January 25, 2016
Curriculum Focus
Hello Families,
Here are the highlights for next week:
Reading-The students will begin a unit on an author’s use of a variety of text structures. We will specifically study chronology, comparison, cause /effect, and problem/solution. We will use a variety of texts to identify the specific text structure used in compared passages. An assessment will be administered on this skill the week of February 1st. I will continue to supplement non-fiction pieces that align with the AKS that Dr. Shaw is teaching in social studies. Homework next week will include passages (reading and/or writing) in Front Row. In our rotations, we will also begin our reading leveler in preparation for conferences.
Word Study- The sol/mon daily grade will be given Wednesday, February 3rd. The next root is “rupt.” All root word lists have been posted on Quizlet.
Writing/Grammar- The focus for writing next week will center on informational writing in response to 2 texts. I will model the how to apply this skill using a science based packet based on microbes. The students will also use this packet as they prepare to complete an assessment on this skill the week of February 1st. The perfect tense grammar grade will be administered Wednesday, February 3rd. We have reviewed the basic parts of speech that will also be included in this grade. Should time permit, we will revisit cursive handwriting.
Math- Next week in math, we will continue our geometry and measurement unit. Our first focus is on the classification of two dimensional figures by their attributes (number of sides, length of sides, angle measures, and pairs of parallel sides). There is no assessment on this skill next week.
Science- In science, we will wrap up the "sum of parts" which relates to our study of magnification. The goal here is to increase students' awareness of how all living and nonliving things represent the sum of their individual parts. Some of those parts are visible and others are not necessarily visible to the naked eye. there is a daily grade Tuesday that will cover sum of parts as well as the microscope.
Social Studies- In social studies, we will begin chapter seven, which covers the roaring 20's. The class will be learning about the Harlem Renaissance, changes in entertainment, and the economic events/choices that led up to the stock market crash of 1929. There are no graded assignments next week.
