Hembree Highlights
Message from Ms. Smith
Hello Hawks!
Happy Friday! I have been reflecting all week on what I want to say about things going on at Hembree Springs as well as our celebrations that we have going on like Black History Month, School Counselors week (next week), and so much more. So, this week's note will be a personal one.
Last week at the dinner table I was reminded of why Hembree Springs is special. I know I say it all the time, on of the reasons this community is so great is because of the diversity, but I saw it fleshed out at my dinner table last Thursday. We were eating dinner and my oldest daughter, age 13, says, "I want to share something with you all, but I don't want you to make fun of me." I of course knew what she was going to say, so I gave her a nod of affirmation. She went on to share that she has a crush and his name is Brooks. The others giggle, but it opened the door for them to share. My third grade son says the name of his crush. Then my 2nd grade daughter, kindergarten son, and my 4 year old daughter all share the names. (I know, too young, but I roll with it to maintain a safe place to share.) Some of you may not know, but my family is mixed race. This means that we have to have conversations in my house that other families may not have. My son asks Jazlyn, the oldest, "Wait where is Brooks from and what does he look like?" My kids each took turns sharing descriptions of their crushes. Then we sat in silence for 15-20 seconds. Nehemiah, 3rd grade, says, "Wow mom we all like someone different." He went on to talk about how cool it was that we are all so different. He recognized that white, brown, black, and everything in between is what makes us special. We have a great deal of diversity at Hembree. As we celebrate Black History Month, I am grateful that our students come together to celebrate what makes us different and what makes us alike too! One way many Hembree Springs families kicked off Black History Month was at Roswell City Hall this past Wednesday. They gathered to see artwork from schools across Roswell. Be sure to check out a few of those pictures of Hembree's artwork below and to drop by city hall at some point this month to see the wonderful art.
Lastly, I want to shout out Lucy Gilbert, Title 1 Parent Liaison, for the Math Night at Tres Hermanos on Wednesday. I was a great event with lots of smiles and math problems.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sincerely,
AJ Smith

Valentines Day Reminders
As we approach Valentineās Day, it is important to ensure that all homemade candy, desserts, baked goods, or other edible items (store bought or homemade) are not to be sold or handed out during school hours. Please know that taking this measure will help us maintain a safe environment for all students with allergies, etc. You can help us protect your student(s) by requesting that they not eat anything given to them by another person, anything that they have not brought from your home or anything not in its original sealed package.
We will celebrate Valentines Day with a card exchange on February 14, 2023. You may send in other non-edible items (pencils, stickers, etc.) with the valentines if you would like. Please make sure to check communication from your child's teacher about the specifics for that day.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping all of our students safe at school!
Hembree High Fives
For several years our teachers and staff give each other Hembree High-Fives. They send in an email giving another staff member a shout out. This has been a great way to recognize all the great things that happen here at Hembree. NOW you can give a shoutout to our staff members as well. You will be able to submit every week. These shout-outs, or High-Fives as we like to call them, will be added to the staff email each Friday.

Souper Bowl Drive!
Please support our Souper Bowl Drive! Interact Club has partnered with North Fulton Community Charities and a former Hembree Hawk working toward his Eagle Scout Project. Our goal is to raise a minimum of eight hundred cans of soup. If every student carried just four cans of soup to school, we would have over one thousand cans. Grade levels are divided into two teams The Eagles vs The Chiefs. Let us see which team wins The First Annual Hembree Springs Souper Bowl. Students should bring cans to their homeroom class. Parents may also bring to front office labeled with homeroom teacherās name. Deadline is Friday February 10th. Contact andersoncm@fultonschools.org for any questions. Thank you.
*This event is separate from the Hembree CafƩ event on Feb. 6th where any non-perishable food items are being collected. Please show your love by supporting both amazing events as you are able. Thank you.
