Masks
“Villainy wears many masks, none so dangerous as the mask of virtue.”
-Ichabod Crane-Sleepy Hollow (1992)
Virture, most often defined as having high moral standards, is not usually associated with villainy. The intent of this quote from the 1992 movie based on Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is not meant to imply that those who display virtue are villainous. It is rather a warning against the masks that are worn, both literal on days like Halloween, and figuratively on all the other days of the year. According to the quote and its context in the film, those who seem to be too good or seem to be walking too much on a higher moral ground than everyone else may not be all that they appear to be. In reality, they may simply be wearing a mask, not to blend on All Hallows' Eve with the ghouls and goblins rumored to walk about, but to deceive us as to their true intentions. That is yet another reason why our business, the business of education, is the greatest business of all. The kids that we have the privilege of working with everyday have no need for these masks of deceit. They are innocent and unassuming. If they do make a mistake, their intent is not nefarious nor villainous. It is simply a mistake. It is our job to correct, help them to see the error of their ways, and help them to make a more 'virtuous' decision the next go round. Maybe that is why these young people get so excited to dress up this time of year and wear masks, because they have no need for them the rest of the year...or maybe it's because of all of the candy that they are going to get!
