Skipton Community Orchestra

Spring Newsletter 2015

Spring is upon us!

We hope you have been enjoying the 'Musicals' theme since we started it in January. We are hoping to continue with this theme till Summer, as some of the pieces are lengthy and I'm sure all of us would like to master them. They are very enjoyable and certainly keep you on your toes. I believe Singin' in the Rain is particularly appropriate this week!

Skipton Christmas Lights Switch On

The orchestra played at this event for the first time in November 2014. We made everyone feel Christmassy by playing carols and well known Christmas tunes even though it was a little chilly in Craven Court. It was such a success that we have been asked to play on the main stage outside the town hall for Christmas 2015. We will let you know more when further arrangements are made nearer the time.

Christ Church Christmas Concert 2014

I know it's been a while but we had a great Christmas concert. As well as having fun we managed to raise £159 through the raffle and selling refreshments. As Christ Church School in Skipton kindly let us use their school hall we donated £75 to their Sponsored Child in Africa. The remainder will go towards new music scores for the orchestra. We wish to thank all those that donated prizes and thank you cards have been sent out to the local businesses that supported us.

Skipton Library

Four of our players kindly played some Christmas tunes at the final Storytime Session before Christmas at Skipton library. The children joined in with their shakers, bells and everything else while we played. We played four pieces and for us it was a fantastic experience....nevermind the children, staff and public who just happened to time their visit right! We have been asked to do it again next Christmas and we can't wait!

Spring Concert

Our first concert of 2015 is going to be at Greatwood School on 24th April at 6.30pm till 8pm. We are playing some of our musical themed pieces, the school choir are singing and the recorder group will be showing us what they can play. To top the evening off there is going to be a pie and pea supper. They are looking forward to welcoming us for the first time and having the opportunity to try out our selection of instruments after the concert. Unfortunately this concert isn't available for the general public to attend this time as it is a school fundraising event.

Holy Trinity Church Summer Fete

Our Summer concert has been confirmed and once again it is going to be at Holy Trinity Church, at the top of the High Street in Skipton. It will be held on Saturday 4th July at 1pm and 3pm. We will be playing for around 30 minutes at both slots. We hope you can join us as we make a lovely sound inside the church. As usual you can have a go at some musical instruments after each concert.

Funding News

We are applying to Skipton Rotary Club to help towards the funding of new music scores, so we will have more news about this application soon.

Bookings for 2015

We have been approached to play at the Fallfest festval in Glusburn and are waiting to hear back from them. Meanwhile we can confirm that we are playing again at Grassington Festival in The Square on Saturday 13th June at 12pm. We hope that you can join us and that the weather is kind! It was such a good atmosphere last time and I'm sure it will be the same this year.

Orchestra Photo

Beware...we are hoping to have another photo taken of the orchestra and our instruments outside the church when the nights get a bit lighter. We don't seem to have a photo of our new conductor Jess.... so you have been warned!

Orchestra Fees

Unfortunately we have increased our fees from £3 to £3.50 a rehearsal from January 2015. We have done this to cover our annual public liability insurance and this was the fairest way to cover the cost. The decision hasn't been taken lightly and we feel that the orchestra is still great value for members as we only operate a 'pay as you play' policy, no membership fees. As a community group we are conscious of national and local funding cuts for The Arts and this is one effective way of ensuring that the orchestra survives in the long term.

New and Lapsed Members

We always welcome new and lapsed members. We realise that life has a funny way of taking over sometimes so please feel free to return at anytime. Please do spread the word that we are here as we find that word of mouth is the best way to encourage people to give us a try. We also have posters at our rehearsals to take away and display at village halls, work staffrooms, churches and so on so please help yourself. If you'd like us to post or email you one then please get in contact.

Keeping in touch...

From time to time we send out emails as well as this newsletter. Please can you keep us updated of any changes to your email address. Also, if we do not hold any details for you, please let us know and we can add you our mailing list. Likewise, if you do not wish to receive any emails from us, please let us know and we will remove your details. We do not share your information with any organisations. We purely use it for keeping in touch with what is happening with the orchestra.....and the odd social!
