Way to Go Mrs. Machida, PVP is Proud of You
Our very own 2nd Grade teacher, Mrs. Machida earned her certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). This accomplishment marks the successful completion of a rigorous, one-to-three year program aimed at honing teaching techniques and styles that bolster students’ enthusiasm for learning.
National Board Certification is an advanced teaching credential that goes beyond state licensure. Only about 40 percent of educators earn the certification on their first attempt.
“The process of becoming national board certified emphasized my strengths as an educator but also highlighted specific teaching practices I needed to improve,” said Salina Machida, second grade teacher at Pleasant Valley Primary School. “I now have a better understanding of how to effectively plan lessons, and I have witnessed my students becoming more reflective learners as a result. They assume responsibility for their learning and are proud to share what we are doing in the classroom with their families.”

Watch D.O.G.S. Update
Greetings PVP Parents,
This is your Principal, Mr. Michaud, with an announcement regarding our WatchDOGS program. We have had a great response to our program. This national program encourages dads and other father-figures to make a positive impact on students by volunteering in the school. We appreciate all of our fantastic WatchDOGS and would love to see an even greater impact so we are making some slight adjustments to the way we set up our schedules. During their day, WatchDOGS may work in the classroom, play at recess and eat lunch with students, patrol the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Going forward, we will have pre-arranged schedules for each day so we can better prepare our staff and students for their WatchDOG. If you are curious to know what your schedule will be for any remaining school days, the watchdog calendar in the front office has A and B day's listed. For the A and B day schedules, please see the below links.

Upcoming District and State Assessments
ELPA Testing - (January 28 - March 22) This assessment is given to all students who qualify for English language development (ELD) services. The ELPA21 summative assessment measures students' English language proficiency, both knowledge and skills, in reading, listening, writing, and speaking.
iReady District Assessment - (January 22 - February 8) All 1st through 4th grade students will take the computer based iReady Assessment for both Reading and Math. This test is given to students in the Fall, Winter, and Spring.
Please communicate with your child's teacher to clarify the specific date or dates that your child will be testing. Please ensure students receive plenty of sleep, have a nutritious breakfast and lunch on days they are testing.
Fountas and Pinnell benchmark assessment - (January 2 - February 8) This is a series of texts that can be used to identify a student's current reading level and progress over time. The word "benchmark" means a standard against which to measure something. The Fountas & Pinnell Benchmark Assessment Systems evaluate student reading and comprehension ability. The Fountas and Pinnell assessment is used to determine each child's instructional level for guided reading and independent reading. It helps students to know what level of text to choose so that they can advance their confidence and skills without struggling.
What can parents do to help?
To help prepare your child, please encourage them to:
- Get a good night’s sleep and eat a full breakfast the day of the assessment.
- Try their best on each question and try not to rush.
- Be respectful of other students who take longer to finish.
What happens next?
All 3 assessments provide results that help identify what your child already knows and determine next steps for instruction. We look forward to sharing these results with you and to providing a learning experience that will attract and hold your child’s interest while teaching important skills and concepts.
Overcrowding/Boundaries
As you are aware, the school board has approved boundary changes that will impact our families who live north of NE 179th Street. Beginning Fall 2019, families who live north of NE 179th Street will attend Daybreak schools. More information will be sent to these families from the district, and we are working on spring and fall events at Daybreak so that our families can get comfortable with their new school. We recognize that changing schools is difficult, and we will support our families every step of the way.
Kindness Tree
In an attempt to make our Second Step learning themes more prominent and integrated in our school, we have introduced our "Second Step Tree" on a bulletin board across from atrium. This tree will change with the seasons and connect with Second Step units: skills for learning, empathy, emotion management., friendship skills, problem solving. In January the tree was a recap of the units Learning Skills and Empathy. Students created "personal goal" snowballs, writing goals that will support them to be a better student or friend. As students pass the area each day they can connect the Second Step learning that has taken place in the classroom to the school wide message they see on the Seasonal Second Step Tree.
Below are some Quotes from the Kindness Tree...
- My goal is to learn all one hundred sight words
- I will be a better student by being more assertive
- I can be a better friend by making others feel better
- I can be a better friend by helping someone if they fall
Social Emotional Development
During the month of February, all grade levels will be reviewing Second Step lessons, reteaching lessons, or diving deeper into certain Second Step topics based on the needs of individual classes.
Woooo Hoooo ...Classrooms Filled Their Beaver Bravo Jar!!!
Every time a student is recognized for displaying positive behaviors that meet one of our school wide expectations, they receive a Beaver Bravo. They then put this Bravo into their classroom jar and with every individual positive behavior that is recognized, classroom jars soon fill up. Once full, the class dumps their jar into our school wide jar located in the main office which results in a spirit day celebration as soon as our school jar is full. What happens as a result of all of these collective positive behaviors? They ALL help shape Pleasant Valley Primary into the amazing community that we all have the privilege of being part of every single day!

Dr. King
Mrs. Machida’s and Miss Rubanenko’s class showed in writing and drawing how Dr. King was a hero who was brave, peaceful, and inspirational. He worked with others and as students stated, “he used his words, not his fists to change the unfair laws.”
Kinder and 2nd Grade Kindness Buddies
Our school has been working hard on showing ways to be a good friend or student. We added snowballs to our Second Step Tree. Pictured are 2nd grade and Kindergarten buddies working on their snowballs together. We are looking forward to adding hearts for our February monthly focus on kindness.
