FROM MR. BACHMEIER'S DESK
Wow has time been flying here at DL-B! When I look back at the last month, I must say that it has been a very busy month with the volleyball games, cross country meets, football games, and Parent – Teacher conferences. I want to thank everyone who took part in supporting our students and our school during these events this past month. School spirit, and parental involvement has been very high and appreciated by everyone in our school district!
The month of November is a busy one as well. Our students are in the heart of the first semester and I am very excited to attest that our students have been actively and eagerly learning. For those of you who do not get the opportunity to see how our students learn, let me tell you that as an educator one of the best feelings in the world is to see a student learn a concept, grasp material, and retain it or reiterate the material to you or someone else.
In reflecting on this school year, I wanted to take a moment to tell you how impressed I am with our entire staff here at Des Lacs – Burlington. Our students in both buildings have adults that care for them well beyond what I could imagine. From paras, administrative assistants, cooks, janitors, bus drivers, administrators, and teachers give their all for our kids and their education. I often hear how our schools are welcoming, and energetic for our students and I wanted to take a moment to say, the staff I am privileged to guide second to none. I am proud to say our children get to work with this fine group of people each day. As parents I know that you are entrusting us to work with your most prized possession and it is something that no one in our school district takes for granted!
Finally, this month’s quote comes from Arthur Ashe “Success is a journey not a destination. The doing is usually more important than the outcome.” I believe that we are all lifelong learners and that we are always looking to be more successful. I find this quote to be especially true as I watch the young people in our building trying to take the journey of success with the path constantly changing!

Junior Duck Stamp Art
On Thursday, November 3, Jane Kalmback, a North Dakota artist, came to the elementary and helped students create a drawing for the Junior Duck Stamp contest. Students in grades 2-6 drew different types of ducks needed for the contest based upon their grade level. Students and teachers are completing the drawings to send them into the contest for March. Ask your child about the type of duck they drew!
STEAM Night
Thank you to Minot Discovery Center for bringing such fun activities to our school! Students were able to challenge themselves with electric circuits, build drivable cars with wooden planks and wheels; create a masterpiece with oil pastels; draw a beautiful Halloween picture; experience a wind tunnel; and many other activities. The evening had great teacher helpers and National Honer Society members. The new Discovery Center plans to open their doors in Minot sometime in February. Thank you to those that attended, it was a fun night!

Here are a couple helpful reminders to stay proactive within your child’s educational success.
- Actively check grades within PowerSchool.
- Grades are updated within PowerSchool regularly; however, it is important to actively check your child’s Google Classroom.
- Daily tasks/assignments are posted in Google Classroom.
- If your child says that he/she does not have homework, it probably wouldn’t be a bad idea to have them open their Google Classrooms to show you!
- If you ever have questions/concerns about your child, do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teachers.
- Each teacher’s contact information can be found on our district’s website.

SQUABBLES
At DLB Elementary, I have been teaching our students a concept for handling aggressive behavior that is the opposite of what we have been taught for many years. I have found that strategies such as walking away, ignoring it, telling them to stop, or using an “I statement” don’t work when it comes to handling aggressors or “bullies”. Lost as a school counselor, I happened to come across Squabbles and it has been a game changer.
What is Squabbles?
Bullying is an imbalance of power. Someone is trying to have power over you. They want to see you lose and they want to win. The Squabbles concept teaches us to see “bullying as a game of winning and losing. The aggressor wants you to get upset by becoming angry or sad. If you get upset, they win. If you don’t get upset, you win. When we don’t get upset, they have a crisis of conscience, and they will back off. It is simply not fun anymore.
Chris Scheufele, a co-creator of Squabbles, came to our school in the spring of 2021 to first help kick off this concept throughout our school on this topic and implement it school-wide. Squabbles teaches our students to be resilient and prepared to face people who are mean which is exactly where I want our students to be.
The Trifecta: One of the Staple Tools in Squabbles
The Trifecta helps students to decide why someone is mean to you and how to solve it.
· Bother (red emoji) – Their goal is to bother you. Solution: 1) Don’t get Upset 2) treat them like a Friend. Say “So?” or “That’s Nice!”, agree with them, compliment them, etc.
· Jokester (Yellow Emoji) – They are doing it for a good laugh and they chose you to be the butt of the joke. Solution: Laugh with them or tell a joke about yourself.
· Hurt (Blue Emoji) – They are hurt because of something you did or something else that is going on in their life. Solution If hurt by you: Ask: Are you Mad at Me? If so, sincerely apologize. Solution if Hurt by Something in their life: I’m really sorry you’re going through that.

Dia de Los Muertes (Day of the Dead)
This week was a very special week for me as a first-year Spanish teacher! We were able to discuss how certain holidays came about and the reasons why they are celebrated how they are. We talked about the origins of Halloween and how it originated in the northern part of Spain with the Celts who later migrated into other parts of Europe.
The Celebration known as the Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) is one that I have been very excited about covering. If you have come to my room and you've seen the decorations for this week you will notice that there are trees on all the walls. These are the family trees of each of the students in the class. Each tree represents who they are and where their roots began in another part of the world. This holiday is a time to remember and find ancestors that you may not have known about and find stories that have been shared by others. As I walked around the room and looked at each of their family trees it was inspiring to see what my students were able to accomplish when they sat down with their parents to gather information. Some even called grandparents to fill out their history as well. There is something to be said about knowing where you come from and who your family is! When it is possible to hear the firsthand accounts from relatives, they become more than just stories to the one receiving them.
I was able to share my own family history and many students have begun to dig deeper into their own. The Family Search app is what I used to show my history to them on the board and some students have even tried the app themselves and have been able to go back 7 or more generations. What I truly love about family is it is one thing that can bring us all together on common ground. I have seen what it can do for families when they are linked together through generations.
Learning about Day of the Dead (Dia de Los Muertos) has been a great experience in connecting families for generations and learning stories of Family history.

ATHLETICS
Who’s ready for some BASKETBALL? The Lakers just got back into the gym for some ORANGE BALL and we’re so excited! The girls are getting ready with some open gyms and shooting. We return a small number of girls, but a ton of experience in big game situations. Last year’s team missed the state tournament by a couple points and we feel like we could be right back there again this year. These girls DO NOT QUIT! Even when getting down by double digits in some games, they still just kept fighting: never slowing down to complain or feel sorry for themselves. Knowing these girls, I know they will have that same competitor’s spirit this season and I, for one, cannot wait to see what they can do. We kick off the season with a home game vs. Harvey on November 29. Don’t miss out!

National Honor Society Information
Membership criteria
To be selected to the National Honor Society, students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. They are also required to complete an information form showing their interest and desire to be a part of this organization. The information forms are reviewed and selections are based on a variety of factors, which can be reviewed in the bylaws linked to the website (see below).
For students considering NHS as an option in the coming year, we highly recommend keeping track of community service hours over the summer and into the next school year. The current bylaws require a minimum of 10 service hours per year for all members. Other requirements include attending all monthly meetings, carrying goals of scholarship, leadership, character, and service, and actively participating in group projects through the year.
Information forms will be shared with eligible students in January 2023. For more information, please contact the chapter advisor, Mary Eldredge Sandbo at the high school.
