Spotlight on Social Emotional Learning
In order to bring our parents and community up to speed on all things Social Emotional Learning, I'll be zooming in on specific standards during the upcoming editions of Avoca West News. Let's start at the very beginning -- getting a stronger understanding of emotions and how to manage them.
The overarching aim of Goal 1 helping our kids to "develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success." In order to get there, explicit modeling and instruction must take place to teach our s children to:
- Identify emotions and how they can change during the day and in different situations
- Recognize different factors that impact our emotions (triggers) and cause stress
- Utilize strategies for dealing with upsetting emotions to help calm and reduce stress
This is also the beginning of helping our kiddos learn to express themselves through "I-statements" and this important work helps to pave the way for students to understand how others might feel and their perspectives (a goal for later!). Within the classroom, our students are explicitly being taught how to listen to their bodies to better understand positive and negative feelings. Many staff members are also building in "mindful minutes/moments" with students so students can feel the power of belly breaths, self talk, and other mindfulness strategies to to calm and ground their bodies.
How can you help at home? Talk through times when you're feeling frustrated and strategies you use to get yourself back in action. Notice characters in stories and help your child name how he/she might be feeling (the answer may surprise you, but it will start a great conversation)! Be expressive with your facial and body gestures and help your child to see the different range of emotions they might feel or notice in others. Practice using "I-statements" at home to share your feelings appropriately (which can be very hard in the moment). For example, "I feel frustrated when I ask you to clean up your things and you ignore me. I wish you would help me so that I didn't have to yell so much because that makes me disappointed in myself." <--- speaking from experience! Model! Model! Model! Perfection is not necessary!
