Happy READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK!
In previous years, this is also the time that we do our Read-a-thon fundraiser; however, due to current situations, we have decided that we will not have our Read-a-thon this year. We know that the pandemic has created financial burdens on many families and businesses. We do not want to create any additional burden. We hope to resume with this fabulous fundraiser next year. We will however be celebrating Read Across America Week with many reading activities, guest virtual readers, and student dress up days.
Monday: Read a Silly Story/Wear a Silly Outfit
Tuesday: Read with a Friend/Twin Day
Wednesday: Crazy Hair or Hat Day
Thursday: Favorite Story/Wear your Favorite Team or Color Day
Friday: Read a Bedtime Story/Wear your Jammies Day
Kindergarten will be putting a slight twist on these dress up days as they learn all about Dr. Suess this week. You can see the kindergarten days in the newsletter below.
This week consists of AIG testing for 3rd graders, an OCS Board Mtg. Tuesday night, Wednesday live Teams sessions to include a Media & Harmony session at 1 pm, and Dairy Queen Spirit Night on Friday night.
I am proud to announce that Swansboro Elementary is the recipient of the NC Purple Star Award. This award is presented to schools that demonstrate military-friendly practices and a commitment to military students and families. A huge shout out goes to our MFLC, Elizabeth Ebert for the work she does with our military families and for completing the application on our behalf! Way to go Pirates!
Last week was KINDNESS WEEK and the following were students were caught being kind. They received a candy bar from Ms. Casemore our school social worker. Thank you for making our school a better place to learn and grow!

Note from Nurse Sammons:
If you OR your child has a fever of over 100, a new cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell or you are being quarantined per medical advice or are being Covid tested per medical request PLEASE email the Nurse or call the school. We must clear your child per OCS protocol before they return on the bus or return to in person school. Nurse Sammons email is Mollie.Sammons@onslow.k12.nc.us. For more information, please check out Nurse Sammons' webpage on our school's website.
Covid close contacts
When a student tests positive for Covid-19, we conduct contact tracing and all students that are identified as a close contact (within 6 ft of the positive person for more than 15 minutes) receive a personal phone call from the school nurse or principal to inform the parent that their child has been identified as a close contact and are required to quarantine for 14 days from date of potential exposure. This is in accordance with OCS policy and the Strong Schools NC Public Health Toolkit.

MAGNET SCHOOL LOTTERY APPLICATIONS
The magnet school application portal for the 2021-2022 school year is now open and will close March 1.
If you are interested in learning more about Northwoods Elementary, Clyde Erwin Elementary, New Bridge Middle, or either of our fully virtual schools, you can find further information on the schools and the application process here: Magnet School Lottery Information.
As families make decisions about the upcoming school year and magnet school applications, it is important to note that, for 2021-2022, both Northwoods Elementary School and Clyde Erwin Elementary School will operate on the traditional school calendar, rather than the year-round calendar.
