PORTER COUNTY CAREER CENTER
The Porter County Career Center is hosting Preview Days for current sophomore and junior students interested in taking a Career & Tech Ed class for the 2020-2021 school year.
Each year, the Porter County Career Center offers a variety of hands-on vocational classes to our juniors and seniors. These take place during either the first three or last three mods of the school day.
Applications are currently available in the PHS Guidance Office. Completed applications must be turned in to the guidance office in order for students to attend open houses during the school day. Bus service is provided to most locations for the daytime previews.
Preview dates and application deadlines are as follows:
December 3 preview: Applications due by November 26
December 10 preview: Evening visits—No bus service provided. Parents and students are encouraged to attend.
February 4 preview: Applications due by January 30
Watch the video below to learn more about the classes available through the Porter County Career Center.
ACTIVITY BUS INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES
When students board the bus, they sign in and provide the driver with address or neighborhood. Our drivers use this information to develop a route and stops that allows for the safe transportation of our students. In order to ensure our students arrive home in a timely manner, buses are unable to make stops at their usual bus stops. Students will be dropped off at their neighborhoods or, if not in a neighborhood, as close to their house as safely possible.
Students do not need to reserve a spot on the activity bus! Simply make sure they are at the pickup location by the designated time, and they can receive a ride home. Students with questions about the time and pickup location of the activity bus should visit the main office at their school.

GOOD NEWS AT PORTAGE
South Haven students have their minds on music
Our South Haven students have been learning about mindfulness by listening to music! As students listened to different kinds of music, they colored pictures that showed the emotions they associated with each song. Their School Advisor, Mrs. Melton, led a discussion on why they drew what they did. Activities like this teach our students to recognize their emotions, communicate them, and cope with them.
"Monahan Mondays:" Fegely students practice SEL skills
Mrs. Hernandez and her Warrior Time class had their first session of "Monahan Mondays." The students use the time each Monday to participate in activities that promote social/emotional learning and team building. Thanks to Mr. Monahan and Mrs. Hernandez for sharing with their students what they learned at their recent Challenge Ed training!
Flexware Innovation, Inc. makes donation to PTS
Portage Township Schools would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Flexware Innovation, Inc., for donating brand-new winter coats, hats, gloves, and wool socks to our students! The kindness of our community partners makes a difference in our students, our schools, and the entire Portage Township community. Thank you, Flexware Innovation, for your contribution!
Fegely Spell Bowl Team finishes a strong season
The Spell Bowl team at Fegely Middle School has had a strong season, working hard and making improvements throughout. At their last competition on Nov. 5, their team member, Liam, had a near perfect round! Congratulations to Liam and the rest of the team!
PTS Mobile Marketplace serves over 190 families in November
Last week’s Mobile Marketplace was a huge success! With the help of our amazing volunteers, we served over 190 families! Thank you to our wonderful volunteers from the PHS MCJROTC, PHS National Honor Society, and Center of Attention Salon in Portage. We would also like to thank the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana for sponsoring our Marketplace. The support we receive makes this possible!
Our next Mobile Marketplace will take place in March. Dates for our 2020 Mobile Marketplaces will be released soon!
Crisman students learn about kindness
Last week, Crisman Elementary teacher Mrs. Chamberlain dressed in a cardigan to celebrate Kindness Day in honor of Mister Rogers! She asked her students to express their kindness by filling out kindness cards and hang them in the hallways. This was a great lesson for our students on the importance of being kind to others!

Aylesworth students learn about the functions of the brain
Our Aylesworth third grade students are learning about the brain and which parts make them feel different emotions! In this week's lesson, they brainstormed how to calm their amygdala when mad by making “cool off” flowers. This is all part of their lessons on mindfulness, conducted by their School Adviser, Mrs. Wyatt!
HOSA students attend State convention
The Portage High School Health Sciences 1 class recently attended the Health Occupational Students of America state conference in Indianapolis! While there, they visited Lucas Oil Stadium, where they participated in various team building activities. The class frequently works on leadership and teamwork skills, which are so vital to careers in the healthcare industry. Great job to our HOSA students!
Fegely honors Mr. Levenda at this year's Candlelight Inn
Our students at Fegely Middle School attended their annual Candlelight Inn this afternoon. Each year, the students dress up and gather for a Thanksgiving meal. The tradition was started over 30 years ago by retired Fegely principal and PTS assistant superintendent Terry Levenda, who passed away recently. Fegely principal Mrs. Caballero read a tribute to him and led a moment of silence. Thank you to our amazing food service staff for cooking a delicious meal and to our parent and community volunteers for serving our students. Fegely is proud to be able to continue this tradition each year.
