Johnson honored with membership in national honor fraternity
Harrisonville High School band director Ben Johnson was invited to become a member of the national Phi Beta Mu band director's honor fraternity-Missouri Lamba Chapter. He was nominated for this honor by retired Harrisonville band director Ed Roberts.
To become a member, a band director must be placed in nomination through a letter of recommendation. A selection committee reviews the nominees for placement on a ballot and then, the current membership of the fraternity votes. A nominee must receive 95% of the vote to be initiated.
Over 20 candidates were nominated this year, eight were moved forward by the selection committee; and six band directors were selected for membership in the class of 2020.
Mr. Johnson recently received his membership invitation from Mr. Roberts. He will be initiated in the fraternity Friday, January 24 at the Missouri Music Educators Conference.
Phi Beta Mu was designed to honor outstanding band directors at the state level, with only one potential chapter per state. There are currently 35 active chapters in the United States and Canada.
Nailed It - Wildcat Edition
Harrisonville High School’s Wildcat Network recently put together and filmed a baking show called Nailed It - Wildcat Edition involving Harrisonville High School students and staff. Five teams participated in this event (four teams of teachers and one team of students). Teams included Mr. Justin Sharp and Mrs. Jenny Rhoney, Ms. Jessica Shelman and Mrs. Carol Millin, Mrs. Valarie Ellsworth and Mr. Bill Kay, Ms. Lauren Skwiot and Mrs. Annie Hake, and the student team of Brad Cox and Selah Norman.
The Wildcat Network camera crew included Michael Dahn, Daylin B, and Parker Rowland. Each team had to bake and decorate a Christmas tree cake in 50 minutes. Students Amy Tracy and Matt Hasenyegar helped Family and Consumer Science teacher Ms. Heather Bristow judge each team completed cakes. Sharp and Mrs. Rhoney took first place for their Christmas tree cake. You can watch the show here - https://youtu.be/rfdKceCXDBw.
HHS students participated in the 2019 Missouri Youth in Government Clark Convention
The Youth in Government Convention is a three-day event in Jefferson City. Students campaigned for and elected government offices. Students presented their own legislation to committees and on the Senate and House floors. If passed, the bill moves to the Missouri Youth Governor who then either signed into law or veto the legislation. The Judicial Branch tried an Attorney General's case and then also participated in Moot Trials. The delegates involved in print media published the "YIG Times" each day and those in video media produced a 15-minute television program that aired both during the morning and evening.
HHS had one student in the judiciary, and two in the legislature. Jacob Allen worked as an attorney arguing cases and Kitty Truman and Colleen O'Reilly worked in the House of Representatives proposing, debating, and voting on bills. They were accompanied to Youth in Government by HHS social studies teacher Eric Sullins.

HHS students gain job experience
Harrisonville High School students gained valuable work experience thanks to the generosity of community members. The students enrolled in the fall semester Personal Finance class participated in mock interviews with volunteers from local businesses.

Participating community members included Ashley Eppert, Hope Haven; Ron Highley, Jordan Raffety, Sonya McLelland, Cass Regional Medical Center; David Coffelt, Coffelt Land Title; Andy Carmack, Kyleigh Sullivan, University of Missouri Extension Office; Ashley Franklin, Hawthorn Bank; Bing Schimmelpfenning, Chamber of Commerce; Lacey Domnick, Shelter Insurance; Cameron Chenoweth, American Family Insurance; George Morse, Edward Jones Investments; Donna Pfautsch, State Representative; Matt Moreland, Red Barn Ranch; Roger Raffety, Cass County Government; Steve Croy, State Farm Insurance; Tracy Sloan, Sherwood Community Bank; Paul Mensching, Harrisonville Schools; Dessie Long, Hope Haven; Jeff Roberts, Family Center; Aaron Aurand, Crouch, Spangler & Douglas; Sherry Collins, Country Club Bank; and Ruben Carter, Hawthorn Bank.
