Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 7th January 2022
Epiphany stars
Being Thankful
In school we have been developing our chapel so that it is being used regularly as a space for reflection and prayer. This week all the children visited the chapel to think about Epiphany and to write a thankful star, with comments and prayers about what they are thankful for at this time. The children had some wonderful, thoughtful ideas that we have added to our prayer tree.
Times Tables
We have been working hard to update our times tables system in school for children from Year 2 to Year 6. Therefore, this week you might notice some changes to your child’s times table homework. In order for our children to accurately recall their times tables facts the children will completing additional challenges such as, missing numbers and mathematical vocabulary within the number sentence. This will mean the children are spending more time on each times table but it will strengthen and deepen their understanding as well as continue to build on their instant recall of these facts.
If you have any questions or concerns please do ask your child’s teacher and look out for more maths updates over the coming weeks.
Our Core Christian Values
Marvellous Masks
The class then explored how our world is changing due to climate change and pollution. They thought about COP26 and what leaders were trying to achieve and the dangers that the world faces. After developing initial designs for masks about 'our fragile world' the children made their fabulous masks and added detail using water colours. To finish them they added a glossy covering to make them stand out. Super work Year 6, some impressive ideas!
Stars of the Week
At our Celebration Worship every Friday, we really enjoy 'zooming' around the classes to hear about the fabulous work and effort of our stars of the week.

School Update
The children have settled quickly back into school and have enjoyed thinking about Epiphany this week and what it tells us about being thankful.
Omicron Variant
According to recent reports it is worth noting that Omicron appears to be more like a cold for some people, with common reported symptoms including a sore throat, runny nose and a headache.Previous Covid variants were more likely to lead to a loss of taste or smell, a new cough and a high temperature - although these are still the three official symptoms.
The symptoms for Omicron do mean it is difficult to always distinguish from a cold, therefore where ever children do have cold like symptoms we do ask that you get a PCR test and isolate until the outcome is known.
Lateral Flow Testing
The new guidance for people who are close contacts does stipulate that people should have daily LFD tests for seven days. If you need a set of tests you can order them online via the following link and they will be posted on to you.

Indoor PE Kit and earrings
A reminder - indoor PE kit for all children is black shorts (white if you haven't updated yet to black) and a plain white T-shirt/school logo T-shirt. Grey joggers are for outdoor kit. Please do ensure children have all kit in school. If children have had ears pierced they must remove earrings, if children are unable to (eg newly pierced) then plasters to cover the earrings should be provided.
Be on time at a quarter to nine
Please do remember that doors open and learning starts at a quarter to nine for children.
Thank you for your continued support.
Kind regards
Steven Holmes
