Falcon Flash
November 10th, 2022
Hello All,
I wanted to send out a debrief of the lockdown process we went through today. A lockdown is a a protocol we have for responding to a threat inside our building. We conduct these drills because, although the likelihood is low, everyone who follows the News knows that these incidents do happen in schools, including elementary schools. We need to be sharp and ready. Educating students is of course the primary charge here at school, but there's only one thing that trumps this-- ensuring their safety. So we take this work very seriously. We also take seriously the concerns that parents have about 'age-appropriate messaging' and have this conversation differently with students in our upper grades and lower grades.
Along with most of the nation, we follow the Standard Response Protocol. I'm attaching a link here that outlines what this is. I'd recommend scrolling down to the "SRP K12 Parent Handout" and clicking that link for more detail. In addition to following this protocol we've taken some proactive measures at Forest Hills to keep your children safe:
- The SRP is a process our district adopted years ago, and staff in every classroom have been trained in how to respond. We always debrief lockdown drills with LOPD after they happen and make adjustments accordingly--both at the systems level and at the classroom level.
- During a school day we don't prop exterior doors. On the rare occasions we need to we will always have a staff member present in that doorway to shut it quickly if needed.
- All LOSD schools have a single entry point through the vestibule at the front of the school. Our vestibule remains locked throughout the school day-- we only permit admission to our students and to adults who have gone through the necessary screening process via our Raptor System.
Our drill went very well today! I'm proud to report that all classes took the drill seriously, and performed it impressively. We do these drills to find weak points in our system, and we found a few minor items. We've debriefed items with LOPD, and are making the adjustments accordingly. The drill was a little more than 9 minutes in total, and for most classes they were released before this. I would recommend following up with your student tonight about this. It's a great opportunity to have a conversation at home about this topic, and a natural segway into safety procedure 'gameplanning' in your own home as well.
Thanks everyone,
Jim Mangan

Parents of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders: it’s time for Oregon Battle of the Books, a fun and engaging reading competition that is run by the Forest Hills PTO!

New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.
Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.
Volunteer Application for LOSD
Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.
Bus Passes & Car Line Passes
If your child is riding a bus with a friend, or taking a different bus for a playdate etc, please have your child bring a note or call the office and request a bus pass. Additionally, if your child is going home with a friend in carline please bring a note or call the office and we'll send an end of day note so the carline supervisors are aware.
Bus drivers will not let children on a bus without a pass. Car line supervisors will not allow children in friend's cars for playdates without a note.
Thank you!
