Beginning May 6th, we will be giving thanks and appreciation to our teachers and nurses during Teacher Appreciation Week and School Nurses Week! Please stay tuned for complete details on the week and how families can participate!
I have to say thank you to many people for their time and talents this past week helping us host the Creative Arts Fair and Grandparent's Day--two of our biggest events of the year!
Creative Arts Fair
Teachers- for the beautiful and creative projects hung in the gym
Students- for their effort in creating masterpieces of art, writing, and song
Families- for visiting and enjoying an evening of art
Staff- for decorating the gym and volunteering that evening
Mrs. Meyers- for stepping in to lead our musicians
Grandparent's Day
Teachers- for planning the day's activities and being gracious hosts
Students- for sharing your families with us
Families- for spending a few short hours visiting our wonderful school and donating scrumptious baked goods
Staff- for flowing with the business of the day- all with a smile
Mrs. Poer & her volunteers- for running a busy book fair
Mrs. Leluga- for spearheading the decor and food
Mrs. Oszust, Mrs. Belqas, Mrs. Luka, Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Leader, Mrs. Rzharev, Mrs. Kennedy- for serving our guests and helping clean up the gym
Mr. Bumpass and Mr. Gulley- for keeping our parking lot safe and orderly
I am certain I am forgetting someone (or many) who contributed to this week's events. Thank you to everyone who helped in a small or big way. We could not do this without your kindness!

Home-School Connections
Last week I discussed anxiety in children and thought this image below was a great visual on how it is shown at times when they cannot verbalize that they are having increased anxiety.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies: Insight
In pre-kindergarten through second grade, insight is shown when children can identify their emotions and know how emotions affect their thought and actions. Insight helps determine the level of self-confidence, self-esteem, and empathy for others children possess. We can help promote insight in our children through books, pictures, and play. Praising specific skills rather than broad generalizations encourages a growth mindset with our children. For example: You can say, “Wow! What a great job on your math facts. I can really tell that you have been working hard to learn them.” rather than, “ Great job! You are so smart!”

From the Library
Thank you to my parent volunteers, Jodie Paape, Nicole Kadelak, Jill, Acke, Lisa Heenan, Natalie Glover, Dija Belqas, Summer Lawhead, and Julia Mezo, all of you helped make our Spring Book Fair a SUCCESS, and I couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you. Thank you to the many parents, grandparents and students that came down to the Book Fair to buy new books. Thanks for instilling the love to read in your children!

From the Nurse
Our warmer spring temperatures bring flowers, sunshine and seasonal allergies! I am starting to see more children with red, watery eyes and nasal congestion due to seasonal allergies. If your child is an allergy sufferer please be sure to give their seasonal allergy medications before school. A child that is sneezing frequently or wiping their watery eyes will have a difficult time focusing in class.
Fluctuating spring temperatures make dressing appropriately for the weather challenging. Please be sure your child is wearing pants, shoes (not sandals) and has a jacket for outdoor recess when our spring temperatures are still chilly.

As a school we believe it is important to recognize students on their birthdays. To protect instructional time in the classroom and manage student health needs, we do not allow edible birthday treats in the classroom (this includes CANDY in treat bags). Your child's birthday will be announced on the morning announcements and he/she is invited to the office for a small birthday treat.
If you choose, non-food items may be substituted your child may commemorate their special day by bringing a small treat for their classmates (pencil, bookmark, sticker, etc.) or dedicating a book to the classroom (and placing a special birthday bookplate inside).
OPTIONAL: Families wishing to celebrate their child's birthdays at lunch may purchase Ice Cream Tickets for each child in the class. Tickets are $0.75 each. Please complete an order form in the office 1 week prior to birthday.
