PTA Fundraiser Begins
Students will be sent home Friday with a SW Missouri City Saver Book to sell as one of our PTA fundraisers. As you may or may not know, the DHE PTA sponsors a TON of great activities and events throughout the year.
We also have helped or sponsored the following additional items for the 2018-2019 school year:
- FREE 10 year anniversary t-shirt that every DHE student received at the the beginning of the year.
- The new Student of the Month cups that will begin going home on Friday at the Celebration Assembly.
- And our most recent BIG sponsor is the 2018-2019 Reflex Math Program that every DHE student will be able to take advantage of. Most students have already begun working with this fluency program and it's been a HUGE hit! The cost for this Reflex Math program is approximately $9.80 per student. And since this math initiative has been rolled out, our DHE students have already solved 164,000 facts accurately! That's incredible!!!
And now back to the City Saver Fundraiser book...it will be sold for $25/book and the PTA will receive $12.50 for each book sold! Easy enough, right? This coupon book is filled with a ton of amazing deals from local businesses. If you like BOGO deals - this book is chock full of them! There are also fun activities that many families participate in already so why not use a coupon? Boutiques and local shops are included too! Do you shop at HY-VEE? Spend $100 and get $20 off of your purchase - this is just one example! The book pays for itself with the HY-VEE coupon and one other use. This book has over $3500 in savings so why not take advantage of it?
Students will come home Friday with a "SAMPLE" book to show friends and family. Also included will be an order form/envelope to collect money. We will sell the books from Friday, September 28th - Friday, October 5th. Please return the "SAMPLE" book and order forms/money by Friday, October 5th. Sold books will be sent home with students the following week.
Please do not sell door to door as we want to keep our students safe. Students will have an opportunity to win some fun little prizes as well for being a top seller.
If we hit our school-wide goal of earning $3200 for the Reflex Math program - Mr. Holt has agreed to participate in a crazy stunt or challenge...we're keeping a lid on our ideas until the book selling has been finalized. Students are welcome to submit any ideas they may have too. We might also include a classroom challenge as well...we'll keep you posted!
Thank you for your help in making DHE great!

Mr. Holt's Notes
Attendance- It's that important!
Below I have taken an excerpt from a research article entitled, "Chronic Elementary Absenteeism: A Problem Hidden in Plain Sight".
My big takeaway. Being absent matters. Significantly. The research sites that k-1 students who have attendance less than 95%, only have 17 percent chance of reading on grade level at the end of third grade compared to peers with greater than 95% attendance who have a 64% likelihood of reading on grade level at the end of third grade. We currently have 67 student below 95% attendance which is almost 9 days absent at the end of the year.
A key ingredient for ensuring success in school is helping children — at the beginning of their academic careers — get into the habit of attending school every day. While going to school regularly will not by itself ensure that children learn, missing extended periods of school, especially when children are acquiring the basic academic skills that lead to becoming proficient readers, certainly puts a child at risk.
The research shows: • All children, regardless of socio-economic background, do worse academically in 1st grade if they are chronically absent (missing 10 percent or more of school including excused and unexcused absences) in kindergarten. A recent study in California found that only 17 percent of children chronically absent in both kindergarten and 1st grade were proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade as compared to 64 percent of their peers who attended regularly(missing less than 5 percent of school.)
Wear your 10 Year Anniversary Shirt on the 10th of Every Month
As part of our 10 year anniversary of DHE, staff will be wearing our 10th anniversary DHE shirts purchased by PTA. DHE students are invited to wear their shirt on the 10th of every month as well!
Recognizing DHE Teachers and Staff:
One of the great things we do here at DHE is celebrate teachers and staff. If you would like to have your child’s teacher or someone else be recognized, please click HERE to do that.

- ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate; 1 hour training)
- Emergency Preparedness and Building Security (1 hour training)
- Mental Health/Suicide/Bullying (2 hour training)
DHE STAFF LEARNING
Your DHE staff is currently studying Collective Efficacy. We are reading the book, Collective Efficacy, written by Jenni Donohoo.
