Battle of Vicksburg

One of the most important wars that Ulysses S. Grant fought in began May 1863 at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Vicksburg was the headquarters of the Confederate. Grant laid a siege to the city of Vicksburg for days. The Union won and it was one of the key wins for the Union.

Battle of Fredericksburg

The battle took place during December 11-15 1862. This war was commanded by General Ambrose Burnside. The Frederiksberg battle was a major defeat for the Union. By the end of the day they were forced to retreat. This battle was one of thew low parts in the war. The south celebrated while Lincoln came under and increasing political pressure for not ending the war quickly.

Appomattox, VA

On April 9, 1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House. In the early 1865 the Union marched through Virginia, and pushed back the Confederate forces. Also in 1865 Robert E. Lee and many of his soldiers had abandoned and were forced to retreat, but the Union had cut them off and they were forced to stop at the Appomattox court house. On August 20, 1866 President Andrew Jackson signed a document that stated that the Civil War was over and that the United States was at peace.
