Alief ISD News and Recognitions
Alief ISD seniors Mohamed Mabizari (Elsik), Isaiah Osazuwa (Taylor) and Joseph Bilski (Kerr) were spotlighted by ABC 13.
Kerr High School students Queen Eche and Hillary Nguyen took second place at the Urban Debate National Championship in Washington, D.C.
Eche was also recognized as the second best individual speaker in the tournament. The Kerr High team qualified for the National Championship tournament by winning the Houston Urban Debate League’s City Championship tournament in March. The Kerr High students represented the first Houston Urban Debate League team to reach the finals round at the national championship tournament.
Eleven Alief ISD 7th grade students received state recognition status based on their SAT or ACT exam results through the Duke TIP Program.
Of the 7th grade students who participated in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) and took the ACT or SAT exam, 28 qualified for the eStudies (distance learning) Program, 16 qualified for the Summer Studies Program, and 11 have been given State Recognition.
The following 7th grade students received state recognition status based on their exam results. These students scored at or above the 95th percentile of all 7th grade student testers in Texas and will be recognized at the State Recognition Ceremony:

- Susan Tran (O'Donnell)
Alief ISD students took top honors at the 34th Annual Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering State STEM Competition, sponsored by ConocoPhillips.
Congratulations to:
- Han Nguyen (Kerr) – 1st Place T-Shirt Design Contest
- Rahawa Ghebrelul (Kerr) - 1st Place Engineering Design Challenge
- Omar Martinez (Olle) - 2nd Place Engineering Design Challenge
- Haani Mirza (AECHS) - 3rd Place in 11th Grade Math
Kerr High School students won top honors in the Mayor’s Art Scholarship Competition.
Out of the six winners from across the Houston area, three of them were students from Kerr High School. Thu Ha won first place in the juniors category and won $1,000. Tien Dinh took second place in the senior category and won $3,000. Jennifer Vuong placed third and won $2,000.
The competition, made possible through the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs and the Houston Arts Partners, recognizes excellence in student visual art and creative writing that positively expresses cultural identities and features of life in Houston-area neighborhoods.
Alief ISD high school students advanced to the UIL State Track Meet.
The student athletes will be participating on May 11 at the Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas at Austin.
Taylor High School:
- High Jump – Esther Oboye
- 4 x 200 Relay – Eric Prier, Khambrail Winters, Shea Whiting, Jr., Demontray Callis, Faizal Akinlusi and Anthanase Mwamba
Elsik High School:
- 4 x 100 Relay – Treveon Lindon, Garfield Stanley, Ty-Irvin Walker, Kelvin Leon, Patrick Nyema and JeVaughn Stanley
Congratulations to Alief ISD's 2019 JASON Learning Argonauts!
The JASON Learning Argonauts will be conducting research in the field and will be studying bees and pollinators in Costa Rica this summer. Congratulations to student argonaut Juanita Omeje (O’Donnell Middle School) and teacher argonaut Lewis Moore (Elsik Ninth Grade Center).
Center for Advanced Careers student Kelvin Tran (ENGC) passed the final exam to receive his Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) certification.
He had to take a total of 3 exams to pass this certification.
