Notes from the Nurse
This time of year is particularly difficult for students with asthma. Changes in weather, illness, and allergens make breathing problems worse. If your child has been diagnosed with asthma, please make sure we have an asthma action plan and inhaler at school. This will help your little Cardinal to stay healthy and happy... and in school!
If you need assistance with an asthma action plan, or have any questions regarding asthma, please contact Nurse Heather for additional available resources.
Please visit our new Menchaca Health Services website for announcements, information, and documents and forms at: https://sites.google.com/southsideisd.org/menchaca-health-services/upcoming-events

Every Student. Every Day.
Last week our Average Daily Attendance was 90.2%
Texas State law (Texas Family Code §65.002)
requires schoolchildren to attend school each day that instruction is provided. The law applies to children ages 6–18.
Once a child is enrolled in prekindergarten or kindergarten, the student must attend school, as the attendance laws apply to your child too.
Regular school attendance is essential for students to make the most of their education to benefit from teacher-led and school activities, to build each day's learning on the previous days, and to grow as individuals. Absences from class may result in a serious disruption of students’ mastery of the instructional materials; therefore, parents/guardians should make every effort to avoid unnecessary absences.
For questions regarding your child's attendance, please contact our PEIMS Clerks:
Kindergarten Library Book Check-Out
Students in Kindergarten check-out library books to take home every time they visit the MECC Library during their specials rotation. When our little Kindergarten Cardinals check books out from our library they need to treat them with care, so that others can enjoy them for years to come. Here are some things to remember when books come home:
- Watch Out for Water - Water and other liquids can ruin books.
- Store your book in a safe place - When you bring your library book home, be sure to store it in a safe place like your backpack. Pets and very young children can cause unwanted accidental damage.
- Handle Books Gently - Always turn book pages carefully. If a page accidentally rips while you are reading it, please bring it into the library for repair.
* In order to teach our PK4 students how to properly care for books, when they check-out from the library, those books remain in the child's classroom under the watchful eye of the classroom teacher.
Meet & Greet
Did you know that each day our MECC teachers and staff diligently load more than 400 students onto buses for a safe ride home?
Please remember, Southside ISD Safety protocols require a parent/guardian or authorized adult to meet their MECC student at the bus stop. Failure to abide by this safety protocol could result in the loss of bus riding privileges for your student. If you do miss your child's bus, please contact Southside ISD Transportation at 210-882-1624

Don't Be Late, You'll Miss Something Great!
School Begins at 7:10 A.M.
One of the most important aspects of school is that it is organized, scheduled and predictable. Students depend on the structure of the day. They know where they have to be and when. They know the main purpose for being in school is to learn and that routines are in place precisely to help them focus on that learning.
When students are repeatedly tardy, these routines are disrupted. Children who are often late have trouble settling in and mastering routines. Tardiness can throw off their whole morning or even their day, especially if the late commute to school was stressful. Thank you for being on time!
