March 2023
Parent Support Specialist's Message: Mrs. Rivas-Benavides
We have one left before Spring Break. I want to stress the importance of attendance and laptops. Attendance is important because we have one week before the third nine weeks ends. That means we will have nine more weeks of school when we return from Spring Break. Students will have nine weeks to end the school year the best they can. A huge part of the remaining school year is testing. Students will be studying and completing state mandated tests during the remaining 3 months of school. All of the tests will be done using their laptops that were distributed by the district.
With that being said, it is very important that STUDENTS BRING THEIR CHARGED LAPTOPS TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY.
Lastly, I wanted to let you know that the district is now accepting enrollment applications for the upcoming school year. Please try your best to register your students online through the Parent Portal for the 2023-2024 school year as soon as possible. Feel free to reach out to me if you require assistance. I will be hosting a registration clinic in March so please look out for that.
Thank you all for your support.

Burnet Middle School Free School Meals
Did you know Burnet Middle School have access to free breakfast and lunch this year?
Who qualifies: All of Burnet Middle School students receive free meals this school year, regardless of income and without any application or documentation. We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity to have a balanced meal, at no cost.
About the meals: Meals feature foods that are cooked and prepared by staff in our school kitchens. The healthy meals include protein, grains, fruits, vegetables, and milk. We offer vegetarian options at both breakfast and lunch. Austin ISD menus feature local, sustainably-sourced, and clean label foods.
About breakfast at school: We serve breakfast daily and feature items like whole grain pancakes or waffles, chia bars, locally-baked muffins, cereal, and fresh fruit.
About lunch at school: Lunch menus feature a variety of foods intended to connect with our middle school students. Student favorites include whole grain pizza, burgers served on locally-baked whole wheat buns, and a variety of scratch-prepared options like tacos, enchiladas, and pasta. We also offer fresh fruits and vegetables daily, often Texas-grown.
Bringing a sandwich? Let us take care of the sides. As long as a student selects three different meal components, at least one being a fruit or vegetable, it qualifies as a free meal.
Healthy snacks and drinks: We offer a variety of snacks, like cookies and Pirate’s Booty, along with beverages like Naked Juice, all available for purchase.
Good to know: As a federally funded program, we receive funding for each meal served; the more meals we serve the more funding we have to invest in the quality of our food, maintain local jobs, and support the Texas economy.

REMINDER: PARENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DROP OFF OUTSIDE FOOD FOR THEIR KIDS.
Burnet MS Cell Phone Policy
For the 22-23 school year the cell phone policy will be enforced as follows:
All student cell phones should be out of sight from 8:20-3:50. This includes earbuds/airpods, they too should be out of site. It has become increasingly disruptive to the Burnet learning environment. Students are using phones to engage in social media/texting instead of focusing on their academics more than pre pandemic. Students all have a one to one devices and hence will not need cell phones for their learning. Students are expected to bring their Chromebook every day. Cell phones will also not be seen during the lunch time.
If students cell phone is seen by any staff member it will be picked up and turned in to the front office for the following:
1st time: Parent must come pick up the phone/earbuds/airbuds or student can pay a $15 dollar fine
2nd time: Parent must come pick up the phone/earbuds/airbuds and pay a $15 dollar fine
3rd time: Parent will be asked to have student leave phone/earbuds/airbuds at home
If the student refuses to give the phone/earbuds/airbuds to the teacher after being reminded several times, a student referral will be written and the phone/earbuds/airbuds will be confiscated by the administrator. The parent will be called to pick up the phone and pay for the $15. If the student complies and turns it in to the teacher, then they have an opportunity to pay $15 and get the phone/earbuds/airbuds or the parent can come for a conference and get the phone/earbuds/airbuds back with no fine. If it is continuous or a refusal of turning the over phone/earbuds/airbuds the fine will be given.
If any parent needs to give a message, please use our 512-414-3225 to speak to one of our clerks and the message will be delivered to the student. If a student needs to get a hold of the parent, students can be allowed to use campus phones as long as it is not a disruption to the learning environment.
