Weekly Wildcat Notes: September 5 - September 8, 2023
9.5 to 9.8 is an "A - B - A - B" Schedule
Great Energy at Back to School Night 2023
F-14 WHS's Confidential Counseling / Wellness Center
We continue our partnership with ACS (Adolescent Counseling Services) and I am excited to share that Elizabeth Harris will be working very closely with Kathleen Homes, our Mental Health Specialist. Ms. Harris will serve as the ACS site director, overseeing the interns, who work directly with our students. Ms. Harris comes to us having recently worked with the Las Lomitas School District and as a provider of clinical therapy services via the Community Counseling Program.
Fall Sports are in Full Swing
The girls golf team won their first match in the Bay Division, outperforming San Mateo 215 to 240. Katelyn Fung went home with a medal with a score of 34.
On 9/1, the Woodside JV team opened the evening with a big win against Overfelt (42-14). The Varsity football team won their away non-conference game against Overfelt (San Jose, CA) by a score of 39-30. The game was exciting and many players had the opportunity to gain some play time. The leading offensive player was Evan Usher while Mason Furtado delivered defensively.
Both water polo teams, girls tennis and volleyball teams face a busy week ahead starting on Tuesday, September 5th and on Wednesday, September 6th, our inaugural girls flag football team will scrimmage Menlo School on Wednesday at Menlo. Please come out to any of our games and support the wildcats!
Universal Free Meals for all Students & Additional a la carte Offerings
SUHSD is offering Universal Free Meals to students this school year in compliance with the California Department of Education Nutrition Services Division guidelines. This means that your student is entitled to receive a free compliant breakfast and or lunch during the school day free of charge regardless of their ability to pay. Please consider completing a meal application that may qualify your household for other limited income based discounts such as reduced priced internet service.
NOTE: the Kitchen is open for breakfast if students want to eat before school starts. We serve from the Quad area window from 8:15am to 8:30am; however, that would count as one of two of their free meals.
We are also offering a la carte snacks, beverages and second meals for purchase during the school day. Students must have funds in their cafeteria account to purchase second meals, healthy beverages and or snacks. Parents can create a free myschoolbucks account at WWW.myschoolbucks.com or through the link on the food service payment page. MySchoolbucks is also an App. The free app can be downloaded on iOS and Android. The app will also be used for other payments District wide throughout the year.
Seeking Mentors for the Green & Graphics and Technology Academies
Consider Mentoring
Want to make a difference in a teenager's life? Had a mentor yourself or wish you did? Easy communication in person as well as through email, phone, and zoom.
Mentoring Program: WHS Green and Graphics & Tech Academies are looking for career mentors. The mentor program will pair students with professionals to discuss both academic and career goals. The student's career interests are wide-ranging from technology and design to environmental policy and sustainable careers. I'm hoping that you, or someone that you know, might be able to participate in this program as a mentor.
Commitment: Approximately 2 hours per month from October 2022 to May 2023, with a set curriculum that is focused on career exploration and developing the students' business communication goals. Key deliverables include an elevator pitch, SMART goals, resumes, mock interviews, and a job shadow.
The First Introductory meeting is planned for November 3 or 4th, depending on your student's class.
Signup: Please email whsmentor@seq.org or click here to sign up.
Message from the Principal
Dear Woodside Students and Families:
Did you know all WHS students are expected to read at least one 150+ page book of their choice over the summer?
The only summer work for students for the WHS Big Read is to read! On September 22, 2023, students will participate in a classroom assignment related to their chosen books and sense of belonging. Students can use the graphic organizers as they read to prepare themselves for the in-class Big Read activity.
Need ideas on what to read?

Enrolled in an AS or AP English class?
You may use one of the required books listed here OR any book of your choice for The WHS Big Read theme.
As adult role models, many of our staff members engaged in personal reading over the summer, and I enjoyed reading Crying in H-Mart as my Big Read novel. When I started as principal of WHS in 2021, my 95-year old mother moved out of her independent living apartment in Los Angeles and moved in with my daughter and me. The book had me crying/laughing, grappling with my sense of belonging within this new humbling landscape of taking care of my parent. I am looking forward to our entire school community engaging in a meaningful BIG READ activity this year!

The Big Read is a great example of how we work toward meeting our WHS Goals. I will be repeating these goals in the Principal's Message for the next few weeks so that we can all take responsibility and ownership of our individual part to meet our school goals:
We anchor our teaching and learning in the following WHS (WASC) Goals, examining student progress and engaging in professional conversations so that all students have access to meeting content standards while providing meaningful and relevant experiences and enrichment opportunities:
- Goal #1: Increase the success rates of English Learners (EL and Reclassified Fluent English Proficient) on a variety of measures, including the CAASPP and ELPAC scores, graduation rates, A-G completion rates, and/or CTE Pathway completion. (SUHSD LCAP Goals 1&3)
- Goal #2: Implement strategies and provide opportunities for all students to be successessful in a rigorous course of study as measured by A-G completion and/or CTE Pathway completion. (SUHSD LCAP Goals 1&2)
- Goal #3: Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment for students in all subgroups based on the 8 Conditions for Student Success that will enhance our engaging campus culture. (SUHSD LCAP Goals 1&2)
