Message from the Principal
Hello parents,
Our first marking period has come to a close. You may go into PowerSchool to see the final grades your child has earned for each of their classes. Report cards will not be mailed home, so you must log in to see the grades.
Parent conferences are scheduled for December 4 & 5 for all grade levels with an additional day - December 6 - for Junior High parents. Our practice for the past ten or so years has been to have student-led conferences at the Junior High; this will continue this year as well.
You may sign up for these conference at the following links:
The times for conferences will be as follows:
December 4: Session I - 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm; Session II - 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
December 5: Session I - 1:30 pm - 3:00 pm; Session II - 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
December 6: 7:45 am - 2:30 pm (Junior High Only)
Counselors are also available to answer any questions you might have.
Part of our building was in a modified lock down earlier today because of a report of a suspicious package at the courthouse adjacent to our school. Some classes were relocated to the auditorium for two periods. Working closely with the local and county police, we quickly were notified that the package was innocuous and we were able to return to our normal schedule after a short time. All of the students who were affected by this change adjusted well and were understanding of the situation. We placed a two calls out to our parents to alert them of the incident.
Finally, good luck to our football team as they take on Penns Grove away in the second round of the state playoffs tomorrow at noon; go Thundering Herd!
Striving to bring out the best in every student,
Dr. Vivadelli

Veteran's Day Program
The history department hosted a Veteran's Day program on Monday for students. Veterans from Woodbury and the surrounding community came in to share personal stories, experiences and knowledge they gleaned from years of service in the United States Armed Forces. Their message and delivery was well received. Woodbury Junior-Senior High School would like to thank all veterans for their commitment to protecting American ideals. Thank you for your service!
A Peek in Mr. Rival's & Mrs. Dougherty's Classroom
Students in this Chemistry class participated in a lab recently where they examined a reaction between hydrogen peroxide and yeast. The resulting bubbling out of the flask is said to look like an elephant trunk with the consistency of toothpaste. What fun!
A Peek in Mrs. James' Classroom
Students in Mrs. James’ class are not only working on academics, but they are learning valuable life skills as well. The students have life skills goals to achieve this school year and they are off to a great start. The class goes to New Sharon Life Skills Center in Deptford and our students work with their students and staff. During this time, they complete a cooking activity and a non-cooking activity. During the last visit, students made pancakes and decided upon their own toppings.
In addition to the life skills trips, students are working on learning basic housekeeping tasks. These tasks will help the students keep their own personal spaces neat and tidy, along with preparing them with valuable job skills. These tasks range from vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, and wiping down surfaces.
In December, the students and staff will be going on a holiday themed trip to the dollar store and Chick-fil-a for lunch in preparation for the holidays. Sweet!

Staff Spotlight - Jesse Kosior
Subject: Physics
Grade: High School
How long you have been at Woodbury: 3 years
1. What is your "go to" song for the journey to school?
I mostly listen to audiobooks and talk radio on my morning commute so I'd have to say Star Talk with Niel deGrasse. Tyson is always a good go to.
2. Do you have a favorite saying or quote that you try to live by?
"So It Goes" is a quote from the book Slaughter House Five by Kurt Vonnegut (a must read if you haven't). It is similar to the saying c'est la vie or maybe 'oh well, that's life', but it has a much deeper meaning in the context of the story and has always struck me as a powerful message.
3. What is one of your hidden talents?
I can communicate with animals. For instance, I can tell my dogs Newton and Erwin to sit and sometimes they do.
4. What are your "trapped on a desert island" books or movies?
I'd be happy with anything by Stephen King, Brake Crouch, or Michael Crichton, but if I had to choose I would pick Duma Key by Stephen King. The novel is set on an island in the Florida Keys so it would make for a scary read while being stranded on an island. It is kind of like how you tell campfire stories about killers in the woods when you are camping - it adds to the thrill.
5. If you could take your students on a field trip to anywhere in the world, where would you take them?
A tour of CERN in Switzerland to see the world's largest particle accelerator or a trip to Cape Canaveral to see a rocket launch would be cool but the ideal trip would be to see the next total solar eclipse in April of 2024. We wouldn't even have to go any further than upstate New York to be along the path of totality!
6. What is one piece of advice you would give to your students?
Try your best at everything you do. Not everything in your life will count for points, a grade, or college admittance, but your name is on it. That means it matters. The effort you put into your work is a reflection of your character - especially when you are the only one who notices.
