Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
Many schools in Oregon, including Oak Hills, offer the Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) program as an optional activity for our students. Teams of students battle each other by answering highly detailed yet basic questions from the 16 books on that year’s OBOB list. OBOB is very popular at Oak Hills and our teams have competed at both the Regional and State level!
One of the books in the 2018-2019 OBOB lineup has caused a significant amount of discussion, and we wanted to give you a heads up before many of your students dive into the year’s OBOB list. If you are interested, there are recent articles in the Oregonian with regards to this book. Additionally, here is a letter from the OBOB Executive Committee with regards to this book.
George, by Alex Gino, is a book about a transgender child. The book includes some themes and more mature topics relevant to that subject which some parents may want to discuss with their children before reading. It is our recommendation parents either read George prior to their student to understand the topics within, or that families read this book together. Whether your child chooses to participate in OBOB or not, you are welcome to fill out this form or contact Jessica_Baker@beaverton.k12.or.us to indicate that you do not want your child to check out George.
Below are two key points from the OBOB Secretary:
- “OBOB is a voluntary program. No child is required to read every title. If no member of a particular team reads a title, it does potentially put that team at a competitive disadvantage. [...] This is okay. It may potentially disadvantage such a team in competition, but will not diminish the value of the reading students do, the teamwork they carry out, or the value of the 15 books on the list they do read.”
- “Please be assured no content of a mature nature will be used in the writing of questions for this book. Those students who participate in OBOB competitions but do not read George will not be subjected to any content in questions that might reasonably be seen as objectionable for third-grade students.”
We are looking forward to another great OBOB season! The full book list is posted on the OBOB website, and a link can be found via the Oak Hills Elementary Library page. Students are welcome to start reading the OBOB books as soon as they want to, however teams will not be made until later this fall.
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner

TAG Referral
Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is available in our school’s office. Completing this form gives our school TAG committee more information about your child, but it is not required. All qualified students will be considered regardless of its completion.
Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
The Parent Information Form must be completed and returned to our school’s TAG facilitators, Polly Selby or Jennifer Fipps, or the school’s office by October 31.
Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant K-8
The Beaverton School District has been awarded a $669,484 Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education and is in year two of the three year grant. The Beaverton School District (BSD) has developed a comprehensive project to improve the quality of physical education in the District, increase physical activity before, during, and after school, and create a school culture of wellness and activity that improves student health, nutrition, social/emotional development, and learning outcomes. In addition to the grant funds, the District has developed several community partnerships to support the project including Nike and Tualatin Hills for a contribution of over $235,000. The BSD program will serve more than 28,000 K-8 students. As part of this grant there is required data that must be collected on physical activity, nutrition and physical fitness. Please read the attached form with more information about the data collection. If after reading you decide your student will not participate in the data collection, print, sign and send the form back to the main office of your student’s school.
