PINE HOLLOW MIDDLE SCHOOL

Thursday, November 8, 2018

Dear Pine Hollow Parents,

Thank you to the many families who have signed up for text alerts, joined the PTSA Facebook Group, followed us on Twitter, and bookmark our school website! One of our goals this year is to increase communication, so I really appreciate you taking these steps to ensure that you are getting all the great news coming out of Pine Hollow!

If you ever have questions, comments, or concerns, please don't hesitate to send us an email, give us a call, or stop by our main office to set up an appointment. You can also arrange to observe classes or shadow your student for a day! Our teachers and staff are more than happy to meet with you for any reason, and we truly believe that we are a better school when we are working together to support our kids.

Finally, please consider joining us at our next Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) meeting on November 28 or our next Site Council meeting on December 4th. We value parent participation and we hope to to see you on campus soon!

Sign Up For Zero Period PE Coming 2nd Semester

Starting 2nd Semester (January 8, 2019), we will offer a Zero Period PE class taught by Mr. Vallis for 7th and 8th graders. This class will begin at 7:15am each morning. Students in Zero Period PE will be able to take an extra elective class, giving them a total of seven classes. We're also adding a new STEM class, "The Science of Sports, Games, and Toys," taught by Mr. Miller. These exciting additions are an effort to provide more options for our 7th and 8th grade students. If your 7th or 8th grade child is interested in making this change to their schedule, you need to complete the below survey by November 16. Please keep in mind that because there are limited spots in the new Zero Period PE class, completing this survey is not a guarantee that your child will be selected for this change.

Air Quality Alert

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has issued an air quality advisory for smoke through tomorrow, Friday, November 9, for all counties included in their district (including Contra Costa County) due to the smoke from a wildfire in Butte County.

They are forecasting "moderate" air quality for our area through November 12, partially as a result of winds blowing smoke from this fire into the Bay Area and East Bay regions. While this does not require schools and businesses to change operations, we are asking all of our teachers, coaches, and other staff to be vigilant about monitoring student activity and being responsive to students, staff, and visitors who may be adversely affected by smoke and other issues. We are encouraging students to self-monitor as well, and are having students sit out or slow down during PE. We are also asking staff to ensure good indoor air quality by keeping windows and doors closed with air conditioning and climate control technologies used as needed to keep classrooms comfortable and students learning.

Visit http://www.baaqmd.gov/about-air-quality/current-air-quality to read about smoke advisories, air quality forecasts, and view information collected from the Air Quality Management District's air monitoring network. The agency is also posting updates on its Twitter page at https://twitter.com/airdistrict.

View www.sparetheair.org for a description of the reporting zones, an explanation of the Air Quality Index (AQI), current readings, and additional air quality information. We will continue to monitor conditions throughout the weekend.
