BEAUTYCOUNTER
MISSION: Getting Safe Products into the Hands of Everyone
Why is this so important?
The famous writer/poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson, once stated, "The first wealth is health." Much of modern days's focus on health revolves around nutrition, excercise, and life-style. Organic vs. cage-free? Yoga vs. pilates? The list can go on and on. However, very little attention is paid towards personal care products--skin care and cosmetics to everyday bath products. In fact, there hasn't been federal regulations on cosmetics or personal care products in the United States since 1937. The European Union has banned over 1,300 ingredients in their personal care products while the U.S. has only banned 11. Yes, 11.
I was first introduced to BeautyCounter last spring by a good friend who shared the same concerns that most people go through on a daily basis: What products will help my skin? What line of makeup will hold up at work for 8-12 hours? What products can I use to shower with that won't overly dry my skin or cause allergic skin reactions? I was interested in their message but found myself being skeptical--of their claims of being "natural" or whether their skin care and makeup products could perform as well as the higher-end skincare and cosmetic lines in the market.
Last September, I attended an ovarian cancer benefit and met a BeautyCounter consultant. I had already known about BeautyCounter's mission, researched their claims, but I listened to her story and her reason why she became a consultant. So many of our loved ones--young and old alike, have fallen ill to cancer or have unexplained illnesses. As a working health professional, I have seen what human beings face when diagnosed with cancer, and there are many personal care products out there that have ingredients that are linked to (or have been known to cause) cancer. I am reaching out to you today to invite you to take a closer look--a look that will surprise many of you.
The EWG (Environmental Working Group) http://www.ewg.org/skindeep is a great place to start looking more closely at the products that you use every day. Their database uses a scale to rate harmfulness of personal care products from 1 to 10. The EWG has a large database, and I found that I had products at both ends of the spectrum. The discovery was surprising to me, and I am certain that some of your everyday products that you use will shock you as well. Take a look at this first video below...
With the strictest safety standards in the industry, Beautycounter takes considerable pride into what ingredients go into every single product that they create-- no sulfates, no parabens, no dyes, no synthetic fillers or fragrances. There are 1500 ingredients that Beautycounter pledges to never use--hence, the "Never List." Every ingredient in their products has a function; nothing is without careful consideration of efficacy and performance. The health and safety of my family, friends, and loved ones is so important to me, and this includes what we put IN our bodies and what we put ON our bodies!
After sampling the Beautycounter products, I felt that they performed as well as my high end, prescription skin care regimen (sans the toxic chemicals,) especially since I have always battled with oily skin and breakouts my whole life. I also reviewed third-party testing results and read through as many product reviews as I could find, and they all come to the same conclusion. The Beautycounter team has created not only clean and safe products but also clearly delivers when it comes to performance!
I feel very passionately about these products and their mission statement about getting safe products into the hands of everyone. They are changing the face of beauty and health! My hope in partnerning with Beautycounter is to help educate everyone about how the smallest changes can create a huge impact on our health. Please go and check out www.ewg.org/skindeep to investigate your own products, and if they are not listed, please go to The Never List (http://www.beautycounter.com/nikkigonzaga?goto=the-never-list%2F) to see what you should NEVER see in your products.
Here are some of my favorites from Beautycounter:
Beautycounter has a wide range of products and are continuing to expand every year. It's a flat rate for shipping, and you can return products within 60 days--even if the product is almost gone!
Take a moment to check out the video link below of Mia Davis, the head of Health and Safety for Beautycounter, talk about your lipstick. She is responsible for getting BPA out of plastic bottles. I have also added a link to Gregg Renfrew, founder/CEO of Beautycounter, who was featured on Bloomberg TV.
