It's also senior awards season. I'll share the accomplishments of our seniors in the coming weeks. This past Monday, at Norte Vista High School, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program graduates were recognized for their accomplishments. The IB Diploma is a distinguished diploma recognized worldwide. A global leader in international education, IB empowers students to take ownership in their own learning. The goal of the program is to develop young adults with future-ready skills to make a difference and thrive in a global society. Less than 10% of the high schools in California are authorized to deliver the International Baccalaureate Program. Norte Vista was among the first, authorized in 2008. Students complete the following course of study in IB: Biology, Music, Visual Arts, Mathematics, Physics, Spanish and French, English Literature, History, Theory of Knowledge, and Geography. PLAN AHEAD FOR TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK MAY 8-12

Since 1984, Teacher Appreciation Week has occurred during the first full week of May each year, with National Teacher Day occurring on the Tuesday of that week. However, this year, Teacher Appreciation Week will be celebrated from May 8, 2023 - May 12, 2023, with National Teacher's Day occurring on May 2, 2023. Say thank you to your favorite teachers. I'm very proud of our teachers. We have an outstanding faculty that compares favorably with all of our neighboring education partners.

SCHOOL SAFETY WEEKLY UPDATE

As an education leader four decades into the profession, I've witnessed school safety take center stage the last couple of decades in light of an increase of school violence. It's a primary responsibility among school leaders to keep students and staff safe so that teaching and learning can thrive. In response to my recent school safety weekly updates on our School Vulnerability Assessments (SVA), I've been asked about the vulnerability assessment process. In a nutshell, vulnerability assessment is an ongoing process through which a team of highly-skilled and trained experts identify and evaluate potential risks and areas of weakness that could have adverse consequences. The objective of the SVA's are to create a level of protection that mitigates vulnerabilities to external threats, natural disasters, and other critical incidents and limit or prevent potential consequences, thereby reducing risk and increasing readiness. It's all part of an interconnected process of emergency management (Prevention-Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery). Our Measure J priority is to use the assessment results to enhance school safety through environmental design and infrastructure upgrades.
