Nazareth Catholic Community
March 17, 2019 ~ Feast of St. Partrick ~ 2nd Sunday of Lent
Greetings Everyone,
Tonight, 3/17, our 7:00PM Mass we will remember the 50 victims killed in the terror attacks at the mosques in New Zealand. Please see the statement from President Braveman below that was emailed to the campus on Friday. In his statement, President Braveman mentions this week's Shannon Chair lectures by Dr. Rita George-Tvrtkovic. You will find the details about these lectures below. Pope Francis has asked Catholics throughout the world to be in solidarity with our Muslim sisters and brothers. During this season of Lent, may each of us actively work to eliminate such acts of violence from our world and hearts.
Salam,
~ Jamie
A Message from President Braveman:
"Dear Members of the Nazareth Community, It is with deep sadness we again hear of a violent attack aimed towards members of the Muslim community. Those who lost their lives and those who were severely injured in the terrorist attacks towards those gathered for prayer at mosques in New Zealand are the latest victims of violence rooted in hate, ignorance and fear. The timing of this attack was not accidental; it was during Jumu'ah prayer, a time when Muslims around the world gather to worship and enjoy one another's company. Coming together in the face of such evil is all the more important. Building community across difference has become an act of radical love in our world today, a witness to a firm commitment to live in harmony with justice for the sake of human flourishing.
This week our College, in partnership with the Shannon Chair in Catholic Studies, is hosting two lectures by Dr. Rita George-Tvrtkovic. A scholar of Catholic and Muslim theology, Dr. George-Tvrtkovic will explore the insights and inspiration that Islam offers to those who practice Christianity. It is in this spirit of solidarity that we are invited to respond to such hatred and violence. Those who perpetrated this violence are ignorant of the beauty, moral power, and spiritual depth of Islam. We are challenged to counter this ignorance with knowledge. We are invited to take time to learn more about the nonviolent tenets of Islam and the peaceful writings of the Qur'an. Learning about the nonviolent tenets of Islam and the Qur'an's call for peace between all peoples is critically important. It is one way that we - a college community that understands religious pluralism and interfaith dialogue as integral to our commitment to inclusivity in all its forms - can become advocates for those who suffer discrimination and demonization in any of its forms. May our thoughts and prayers result in actions of solidarity and peace."

Dr. Rita George-Tvrtković:
In a world that seems to believe that an unassailable barrier exists between Islam and Christianity, the work of Rita George-Tvrtković, Ph.D., holds a special importance. A specialist in Christian-Muslim relations, medieval and contemporary, she engages ethnography with textual study of the Bible and Qur’an to explore each tradition’s understanding of the other. Her efforts embrace persons much beloved within each tradition, Jesus/Isa and Mary/Maryam, to help us grasp, and then ponder, the significance each tradition’s understandings holds for the other.
George-Tvrtković teaches in the Department of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies at Benedictine University in Illinois. Her books include A Christian Pilgrim in Medieval Iraq: Riccoldo da Montecroce’s Encounter with Islam (2012) and Christians, Muslims, and Mary: A History (2018), as well as a co-edited volume, Nicholas of Cusa and Islam: Polemic and Dialogue in the Late Middle Ages (2014). She is former associate director of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Office for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs and currently serves on the U.S. Bishops’ National Catholic-Muslim Dialogue.

THIS Thursday: Stations of the Cross
You are invited THIS, THURSDAY, March 21 at 9:00PM in Linehan Chapel to pray the Stations of the Cross. This traditional Lenten prayer is a powerful way to enter into the mystery of Jesus' gift of himself to us.
The Stations of the Cross is not a historical examination of “what happened” on that day in history. Rather, the Stations of the Cross provide an opportunity to use this long standing Christian prayer to let Jesus touch our hearts deeply by showing us the depth of his love for us by placing ourselves into the journey Jesus took on Good Friday.
The point of this exercise is to lead us to gratitude. It will also lead us into a sense of solidarity with all our brothers and sisters who suffer throughout the world. Praying the stations also helps us to remember that we are not abandoned by God as we carry the crosses of our own lives.
Please consider joining us THIS THURSDAY at 9:00PM in Linehan Chapel.
