HURRICANE RELIEF FOR THE ISLAND OF DOMINICA
MSA is in the process of putting together a plan to assist the hurricane ravaged island of Dominica. Hurricane Maria hit the island through the night, last Monday, and it was a direct hit as a Cat 5 hurricane. Most of the Island has sustained major damage with little to no communications remaining.
A group of students have come forward to assist with this plan. Bishop Wes is on board and has provided the name of the Bishop in Dominica who has been in touch with the school. We are still waiting to hear more information from him. He was not on the island when the hurricane hit and was having trouble getting back.
Here are some of the plans:
- Host an assembly to share information with students.
- Work with the Bazaar Committee to access the funds from the Second Hand Rose for Hurricane relief efforts for Dominica. Get students working on collecting for and manning this stall.
- Have the Non-uniform day on Friday, October 6 dedicated to raising funds for Dominica--minimun $5.00 donation.
- Seek support from parents who maybe able to assist with corporate sponsorship.
- Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated and welcomed.
Why Dominica?
Mrs. Moench had the opportunity to visit Dominica last Christmas. The people are lovely and kind, but the Island is very poor. The vegetation is lush and green and the mountains are filled with streams and small rivers as they are filled with rainforests. The main faith of the people on the Island is Catholic (80%). The population is about 73,000 people, size about 290 square miles. It took independence from the UK in 1978.
Take some time this weekend and "Google" some of the news stories about the devastation. It is a very sad reality of what a hurricane can do and the impact it can have on the daily lives of people.
PARKING DURING STUDENT PICK-UP
Please DO NOT DOUBLE PARK on Elliott Street outside the school in the afternoon when picking up your child(ren) as it is causing traffic to back up and we do not want an accident to occur from vehicles coming off of Cedar Avenue or from drivers trying to pass cars by going into the opposite lane of traffic. Please be considerate to other drivers and stop blocking the road.
