Team FMS: Together, We Can! - November 16, 2015
Welcome to our EXPLO Team Newsletter!
Mr. Chapman
This week the 6th grade students began "An Eye for Magritte" - studying the work of famous Belgian artist Rene Magritte. They traced around an old CD to create a large eye, then in place of the iris, drew images in the Surrealist style (like Magritte). They will be completed using colored pencils, making them as realistic as possible, although the images won't be like anything that would be seen in reality.
7th grade students are creating "Ultimate Paisley Patterns". They first learned some of the history of the paisley pattern, then used french curves to create their own version of paisley patterns, emphasizing shapes, patterns, and color. Once the marker designs were complete, students then cut out french curve shapes from construction paper which they covered in shapes, patterns, and color which were then overlapped over the marker designs. The last step will be to add designs, colors, and patterns to the background - completing their very complex and colorful creations. These will be continued this week.
8th grade students began their Op Art projects this week. Op Art comes from the word, optical, and Op Art looks as though it's moving. Students practiced various ideas and once approved, they lightly drew their lines on white paper, using drawing tools to make them more precise, which enhances the illusion of movement. Most students are now completing this project using black Sharpie markers. The students who have art every other day will be continuing this project.
The 8th grade students who have art every day began a "Surprise Locker". These students also studied Rene Magritte and the Surrealist artists. The front of the locker looks very normal, like a regular locker, but the inside has a surprise. The students were encouraged to show images that might defy gravity, change sizes, shapes, or colors. They were challenged to be creative and to not limit themselves to reality. These will be completed using markers and/or colored pencils.

Hornet Pride Choir (7th grade) has received most of the new music for our concert on December 14th! We have rehearsed with Mrs. Saylor, and are making excellent progress. Recordings of sample performances, as well as practice materials have been posted to our Google Classroom. There are recordings of just the singing parts, and the accompaniment available for at-home practice. Keep up the great work, Hornet Pride!
Dr. Moebes continues collecting money for Hornet Pride uniform shirts. $13/$15 for XL.
6th and 7th grade Arts Alive is off to a great start! We spent time getting acquainted, setting up our expectations, and getting ready for a great rotation. FMS and the Fulton community are fortunate to have many veterans! This week we focused on "The Star Spangled Banner" as part of our observance of Veteran's Day. We read about the history of the song, discussed and practiced appropriate etiquette, and SANG "The Star Spangled Banner" in each class! We will be testing over the basic facts about our national anthem next week, as well as beginning our study of duration - note and rest values.
Please feel free to contact me any time! bmoebes@fulton58.org.

Term 3 started off well as new 6th & 7th grade students learned the individual keys on the keyboard, along with practicing their individual keyboarding skills. Next week they will begin basic word processing skills.
In addition to continuing to improving their keyboarding skills, 7th and 8th grade students enrolled in the year long classes stepped up their desktop publishing skills a notch. This week they learned to use text wrapping options with images, along with using headers and footers. In the coming week they will add to their skills learning justification of text, line spacing, margins, and more.

Even during a slow week in the library, roughly 380 books passed through the doors in six days time. I love that we have so many avid readers at FMS!
6th grade parents: Watch for the Six Flags Read to Succeed information letter and reading log to come home soon. The program is only available to students in grades K through 6, so this will be the last opportunity for these students to earn a free ticket to Six Flags by completing six hours of recreational reading. More information will be coming soon!
