How to read a topographic map

A topographic map allow us the see the elevation of the land and how steep the land elevates. There is a interval that means the actual distance between the lines.

Transform plate boundary

San Diego is the place you want to go if you want to see the legendary San Andrea's fault. Although there is no one primal spot to see the fault since it spreads throughout California. When viewing the fault there are many opportunities for bird watching, camping, and wildlife and scenery. As well as many State and National parks along the way.

Thousands of small earthquakes happen along the fault line. The biggest earthquake to have happen was the 1857 Fort Tejon earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9.

The distance from the DFW airport is approximately 1800 Km and the time to get there is 3 hours and 8 minutes (188 minutes). So the approxiamte speed of the plane would be 9.57 km/min.

Convergent plate boundary

The Washington - Oregon coastline is convergent plate boundary. Again there is not one specific spot to view the boundary itself but the coast is an example of a convergent plate boundary. There is beautiful scenery and rocks.

There has been 45 earthquakes around the coast in the past year. The largest magnitude being 5.9 this year.

The time to get to Washington from the DFW airport takes about 4 hours and 21 minutes (261 min). The approximate distance is 2660 kilometers, so the speed of the plane would be 10.15 km/min.

Divergent Plate Boundary

A place that beautifully shows a divergent plate boundary is in Þingvellir, Iceland. There is a mid ocean ridge that can be seen on land. Þingvellir is another place to enjoy wondrous sightseeing.

In the summer of 2000, two severe earthquakes happened.

The flight time from the DFW airport to Þingvellir, Iceland would be 12 hours and 50 minutes (770 min.) The distance is about 6020 km so the speed would be 7.81 km/min.
