Notes From Our Superintendent
Families,
We are coming upon our significant snowfall months so I wanted to remind everyone of some handy information around snow days and delays. There are times when we get snow in the mountains and communities on the front range do not. If the snow is widespread and several entities are delaying or canceling, it makes sense to put that information on the local news stations. The most reliable way to receive that information is by our calling system so please make sure you have up to date information in Alma so you will receive the calls or texts. If you are not sure, you can call the school offices and someone will help you.
Several factors go into the decision of a delayed start. The primary reason to call a delayed start is to prevent hazards for our buses and parents transporting kids. Our buses travel long distances each day and must start routes as early as 5:30 am. A delayed start allows time for CDOT to plow more roads, the sun to melt some of the snow, and it gives families extra time to get out of driveways and such. A delayed start does not affect the number of days we are in school meaning, it is not time that has to be made up with extra days on the calendar.
While a delayed start grants us a safer trip to school, it can create hardships for families. Some parents still need to get to work and cannot show up two hours late. I have worked with Boys & Girls Club to come up with a solution for this issue. Boys & Girls Club will now be open as early as 7:30 when the school calls a two hour delay. They will supervise kids until school opens on those days. Students attending Boys & Girls Club on delayed start days will be escorted to the school when doors open.
If this is a solution that will help you, please plan ahead and complete a membership application for your child with Boys & Girls Club if you have not already done so. If you register now, you can simply drop off your child at the club at 7:30 and then be on your way to work. There will be a $5.00 drop off fee for the service if you are not currently on a monthly membership and you will need to pack a snack or a breakfast for your child. Boys & Girls Club is available for kids ages 5-18.
Please go to the Boys & Girls Club website at bgchr.co to register. The application is also attached to this email along with scholarship information. Don’t forget to attend the annual B&G Club Chili Cook-off!
Thank you,
Cindy Bear, Superintendent
