Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21)
Biology research project
Introduction
Down Syndrome is a unique disorder, its a malfunction of the cell division process and it causes the person to have 21 chromosomes. I met a really cool man once and he had down syndrome, thats why i chose this topic.
Definition
Down syndrome is a chromosomal condition related to chromosome 21. It affects 1 in 800 to 1 in 1000 live born infants. Usually affects the whole body, and chromosomes.
Symptoms
Down syndrome patients usually have trouble learning, mental retardation, a characteristic facial appearance and poor muscle tone in infancy.
Cause of disorder
Down syndrome is caused by incomplete cell division, called nondisjuntion. Nondisjuntion is the failure of homologous chromosomes or sister chromatids to separate properly during cell division.
How it is inherited (its not).
Its very unlikely that the parents could be carrying the gene, its mostly caused by Nondisjunction.
How the disorder is treated
There is not a treatment for down syndrome, they can receive help from a health care team. All professionals who interact with children with down syndrome should provide stimulation and encouragement.
How the disorder is diagnosed
Health care professionals can check for down syndrome during pregnancy or after the child is born. There are two types of tests for down syndrome during pregnancy, a prenatal screening test and a prenatal diagnostic test.
Application of research
I learned alot of information from the research i have done for the disease down syndrome.
