Newsletter Week 7, Term 4 2021

St Joseph's Catholic School Morrinsville November 30th 2021

Principal's Message

Nau Mai Haere Mai,

Well the announcement of the new Covid Traffic Light System was yesterday. Although the orange level for our region comes into effect this Friday 3 December, schools retain the level status until the end of the school year. Our procedures will remain at level 2.

There is lots to do over the next couple of weeks as we prepare for the end of the term. Our class programmes are buzzing and we are organising the last few events to take place. Over the Christmas holidays we are getting a brand new sports shed. It will be almost twice the size of the one we have now. Peter, our caretaker designed this for us and we can't wait until it arrives. A huge thank you to our amazing PFC who have donated the funds for the long overdue shed. We think that the current shed is about 35 years old (give or take).

We are really excited to be able to have parents/caregivers attend our School Prizegiving. To make this work so that you are able to come, we are splitting Prizegiving into three different ceremonies. Year 1 - 6 will be on Monday 6 December 2 pm for Room 4 and Whakatipu Hub and 2.30 pm for Akonga Hub, Room 5 and Room 6. Our seniors Year 7 and 8 will be holding a special Mass followed by Prizegiving on Wednesday 8 December at 11: 15 am. Scroll through our newsletter for more details. Yay! Please make sure that you wear a mask and social distancing rules apply.

Thank you so much for the incredible donations to Community House last Friday. They were overwhelmed with our fantastic response. It is just so lovely to be able to give back to our community.

A special thank you to Madeleine from our Parish who writes the Parish updates for us every fortnight. She has done a great job at keeping us informed. Thanks Madeleine!

Have a great week everyone. Our final newsletter for 2022 will be on Thursday 9 December.

God Bless you and your whānau. Andrea Colebourn, Principal

Words of Farewell

At the end of 2021 we farewell a staff icon - Peter Flynn our Caretaker. Peter first started at St Josephs Morrinsville as a pupil and returned to take up the position of part time caretaker.

For the past 26 years Peter has rescued endless balls off roofs, gardened, mowed, constructed, glued, trimmed, wired, built scenery, put bins out and has worked tirelessly behind the scenes.

If any past or current pupils, parents, staff, BOT or more would like to send a word of farewell to Peter to be added to a card please send it to admin@stjoes.school.nz Thank You

2022 School Information

The last day of the school year for 2021 is Tuesday 14 December at 12:15 pm.

Our school year opens a little differently next year. Our staff are involved in a number of Teacher Only Days towards the end of January and the start of February. Some of these days are call back days and some are Accord Days.

Our school year for 2022 begins on Thursday 3 February. This day is scheduled to be a Learning Partnership Day. This is where parents/caregivers make a time to meet with the class teacher to discuss their child and share any information that you feel will benefit your child. It is also a chance to see the classroom space. You are encouraged to bring your child with you to the meeting. Please note that school will not be open for learning on that day. Bookings will open on 25 January 2022.

On Friday 4 February, our staff will be involved in professional development and learning.

School officially starts for students on Tuesday 8 February 2021. Our school year will finish on Friday 16 December 2022.

Christmas Donations Mufti Day - December 3rd

We know that many families in our local community are struggling and we are aware that Christmas time is a really hard time of year for some. St Joes would like to show our support.

On Friday 3 December we are having a Mufti Day. We are collecting for EZEKIEL TRUST. This is their message to us:

In exchange for wearing mufti, you could do one of the following:

donate food for a Christmas hamper (see attached list),

or buy a small gift for a child (3 age ranges to choose from: 0-3yrs, 4-7, 8-10), buy a gift for a Mum or a Dad or a teenager,

or donate money either for us to buy food items or maybe in the form of a Warehouse voucher so that a parent can buy a gift for their own children?

We are only too happy to accommodate whatever way you wish to contribute. We are so thankful that Morrinsville has such a caring community – and one that knows how to share the love of Jesus at Christmas time.

A couple of points to remember, please:

If buying a gift please do not wrap it. Gifts need to be new (not second hand even if they are in good condition) but please remove the price tag. We have access to a number of helpful youth who delight in wrapping presents and are always looking for ways to help us out, so the wrapping will be done once we have the gifts".

Below is a list of Food Bank ideas. Kia kaha!

School Pool Key

School Pool Key for 2021/22 Swimming Season

School Pool is Now Open for Use

Pool Keys are available for issue from the school office for our school families only and can be obtained by Parent/Caregivers only at a cost $40.00 for the season.

Strict rules and conditions apply with the added restrictions of use under COVID Levels.

Our Parish

The Advent season is our special countdown to Christmas where we are invited to take time from what can be a frenzied period of functions, (maybe not so many this year☹) shopping and cooking to include spiritual preparation for the birth of Jesus to keep Christ at the centre of Christmas.

One way to keep Advent alive in our homes is with an Advent Wreath. A great family activity, something that can be created together and shared in each week as the candles, for Hope, Love, Joy and Peace are lit.

However we choose to observe this season let’s take time to focus on the true meaning of Christmas.

How to light your Advent Wreath:

In the first week, light one purple candle.

In the second week, light two purple candles.

In the third week, light two purple candles and the rose candle.

In the fourth week, light all four candles.

Reflection

The first candle for Advent represents HOPE. Here is a prayer to pray and reflect on:
