Six SDIRC Schools Awarded HealthierUS School Challenge Designation

SDIRC Schools recognized for their efforts to provide healthy environments for students

Six School District of Indian River County (SDIRC) schools have earned HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC) designations in May. The HealthierUS School Challenge, a joint effort with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the United States Department of Agriculture, is a voluntary certification initiative that recognizes and rewards schools that promote nutrition education, physical activity, and healthy school environments.

Schools can apply for four different levels of designation that last for four years: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Award of Distinction. Awarded schools will receive up to $2,000 to enhance the school food service program. Congratulations to the following SDIRC schools that were recently awarded HUSSC designation:

Dodgertown Elementary School (Bronze)

Fellsmere Elementary School (Bronze)

Glendale Elementary School (Silver)

Liberty Magnet School (Bronze)

Sebastian Elementary School (Silver)

Vero Beach Elementary School (Silver)

Extended School Year (ESY) is in action on SDIRC Campuses!

The students attending Extended School Year at the Freshman Learning Center studied Cinco De Mayo and the Revolutionary War, focusing on key vocabulary terms and language skills. Math skills were incorporated as students counted and sorted to fill their pinata with candy. ESY is celebrating learning!

ESY Pirate Week!

Extended School Year wrapped up Pirate Week with a scavenger hunt. This week students studied the 1715 fleet, the Treasure Coast, bartering and trade, and the pirate way of life. Students created their own pirate names and followed a treasure map and clues that included their vocabulary words, that eventually marked the spot for their secret treasure.

Code Skools

The SDIRC, in partnership with The South Florida Accelerator, is hosting a coding camp through Code Skools. This $15,000 per person program is FREE for the students who were selected. In this camp, students will learn JavaScript, HTML, CSS, Ruby, and Ruby on Rails. Upon completion, students will be certified in JavaScript.
